Scam reference checks

Yea it’s the latter, they use a real dealers name on the request to make it seem more legit but it’s a scam.
It would make sense had I ever dealt with the person or business, but since I haven't I'm guessing it's not legit.

How does the scam work if they're just asking you to give a reference? Or is it working some other way, like saying he's Takuya and wants you to give a reference to someone else?

Ironically its pretty much a dead site these days that exists just to shill for Antiquorum
I don't think Antiquorum has any ties anymore with TZ, that was a relatively short lived program. I was on TZ for years (since 1999) but the rules were so restrictive, you couldn't discuss prices or dealers, so it was basically a mutual admiration society. "Nice watch!", " Thanks" And you couldn't edit your posts so if a mistake was made, too bad. And you had to use your own photo hosting site, so as people dropped out many links went dead. I had used FotoTime for almost 20 years, all was well until they had a catastrophic fire at their server farm in France a year or so ago. Everything was destroyed including their backups. So all my posts with pictures are now basically worthless. Just too restrictive of a site, might have been ok in 1995, but totally inadequate today.

Before I was shown the door, I recall there was another thread on there that was puzzling. I actually think it was her that started the thread, about a particular maker of some kind (can't recall who it was - maybe a German company) had made a dial out of mammoth ivory, which she took great pains to point out is perfectly legal (she is a lawyer of some kind).

People replied that it could be mistaken for elephant ivory, so it just wasn't for them. She went on a tirade about how ignorant that idea was, because there's an "easy" test that can be done to prove it's not elephant ivory (I think it involves using a photocopier and looking at the grain or something - can't recall the details more completely) so if you were stopped at a border, there was always a way out of any charges or confiscation of the watch.

She seemed oblivious to the fact that many posts people made were basically just saying they wouldn't want that hassle, and eventually the thread was shut down. I actually wondered if she was shilling that brand...

Yeah, I remember that post as I was one of the early responses saying I'd want nothing to do with that dial - for the very reason you stated.

No, it was someone else asking me for a reference regarding Takuya.

"I was trying to buy a Rolex Daytona from David “TAKUYA” He kindly listed you as a reference contact."

If he is as well known as you suggest, I'm not sure why he would be using someone he's never dealt with as a reference.

Quite strange as the guy behind Takuya isn't named David... wonder then if someone was trying to scam the guy who contacted you. All this scamming in order to usually sell cryptocurrency is a bit strange to me though

Well, at 3 am this morning while I wasn't sleeping I tried to find that thread. The closest thing I could find was this:

TimeZone : Industry News » NEW: Lang & Heyne 'Caliber I' in Ivory

It's not a thread that could be commented on, but maybe this was the watch and that thread was eventually removed.

Yes, strange indeed. I get so many emails that are rather odd - lots of people asking me to give them watches for things, or sponsor their racing teams, etc. If I had half the money these people think I do, I'd be set for life!

Here's today's example:

"Hi there,

I'm a film producer and I'm making a motivational Christian short film this summer. I'm reaching out as I wanted to offer a proposal to collaborate with your business.

I've attached a proposal of what we're asking for, the reward we're offering for helping us, and some information about the movie.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

No idea what the attachment says, and I'm not going to open it just in case it's some sort of virus.

Given my stance on religion and all gods, it's rather funny they would be asking me for help to promote their cult...
