I was visiting the Omega boutique in Houston and saw a couple of pre-moons on display (on loan from the Omega museum). One was a 2915, the other 2998. All I can say is WOW. I've never seen a 2915 in person and, man, it was the most beautiful piece I've ever seen in person (pictures do it no justice)! The salesman was nice enough to take the 2915 out of the case and let me hold it (I believe my knowledge of it proved me trustworthy). For those of you that own one, I'm super jealous. Anyhow, thought I would share this experience. I was excited and pleasantly surprised to see both watches, especially in a boutique. I'm fanboy of both these references obviously. :)

Awesome but couldn't Omega find up a decent DON bezel for the 2998.

Can't wait to see one in the wild, but chances of that are slim here in Australia I guess,

The 2915 dial looks funny with the omega and speedmaster printing not centered.

That's what happens when you send a watch to Omega :whistling:

Ha. Good catch. Didn't notice that. Was too distracted by 2915. A bargaining point should they sell it. ;)

Interesting that the 2998 is matched with a NASA style JB Champion bracelet rather than an, original issue, Omega 7077 or 7912 bracelet. Although the 2998 was the FOIS (First Omega in Space), it preceded the NASA issued Speedmasters.

[QUOTE="Awesome but couldn't Omega find up a decent DON bezel for the 2998..[/QUOTE]

I don't fully get why that 2998 is proudly out on display when the bezel should be 1000 with DON. Are they that rare that even Omega can't get one? It's like saying close enough is good enough - which is ok in some regards, but I don't go to a museum and get worked up over a Model-T Ford that's presented wearing a modern 3 pac duco - yeah, I know, shite example but you know what I mean.

Possibly the watch was given to them by some worthy person and they wish to keep it as is?

Just checking MWO and I see that the Black Bezel for the 2998-1-5 have DONs and the diagonal dot at 70 - don't know why I am second guessing myself on that.

As it appears that this 2998 has a raised dial and straight hand sub registers, I believe this is a 2998-4 or later. A base 1000 bezel would only be correct on the 2998-1 and 2. They did manage to display a great steel base 1000 on the 2915. I believe this, from the layout of the dial is a 2915-1 :).

Yes, I just picked up on that. Don't know why I had 2998-1 & 2 stuck in my head. Awestruck? Something struck! ;)
Should still be DON though right?

Yeah, maybe, but you'd think they'd say so on a small description card.

Agree, I was thinking it was a 2998-4 or later when I saw it. I couldn't ask the staff any specifics as I was more familiar with the pieces than they were. They were unfamiliar with the reference #'s. Their knowledge is more focused on the modern watches they are trying to sell. These watches were not mint, so it does seem Omega got them from a previous owner perhaps. But man, again, I was blown away by the 2915. Seeing it in person was something else. The faded steel based 1000 bezel had character.

Do you think the display case is hammer resistant?

haha. after the smash & grab I would've been upset to discover the DN90 bezel on the 2998. Probably would've returned it ;)

I agree, that looks really odd, any 2915 boffins care to comment?
