Rusty Movement in Speedmaster MKII 145.014

Hi there,

I recently picked up a Speedmaster MKII from Japan. The movement looks in really rough shape (not currently running - ran for about 10m with chrono function working, and then stopped, stuck fully wound). I took some pictures of the corrosion. I'm amazed it ran at all.

The case seems alright and the dial is in good condition. Crystal a little scratched but easy fix.

Given the corrosion on the movement, I'm wondering how "beyond repair" this is. I am weighing up sending to Omega for a full service, but wasn't sure if the level of damage would be covered by their standard $900 service. Or I could find a local watchmaker (I'm in SF Bay Area), but my presumption was the rusted parts would have to be replaced vs. cleaned, so would need to be ordered in.

I would love some feedback on just how bad this looks in the grand scheme of things, and my best option (and if I'm probably looking at a full movement replacement).

Thank you so much! Cheers!

Yikes that's not great. Looks like that's out of the question! Thanks for responding.

It’s not in bad shape despite the corrosion - most of it will be chemically removed during the teardown cleaning. The case can be stripped and dipped. Send it to an independent watchmaker for movement rework, new crystal, and seals. The photo isn’t clear, but the dial and hands look savable; one subdial hand shows minor corrosion that should be treatable while preserving the patina. Check for small rust specs near the corrosion area, but overall it’s not a concern and definitely worth restoring.

I would get it to a competent watchmaker ... after cleaning correctly, assessment can be made .. perhaps it will come out not too badly .. sometimes the look is terrific but reality is not definitive .. Good luck !
