My thoughts are you need more money than sense to pay £50K for that watch, which is basically a 900% premium over an unissued watch.

Interesting expression, never heard it before, where is it from?
Does it mean price band or expertise/interest?

Wow... the RN could use Seamasters as a fundraiser... need to buy an aircraft carrier, just issue all the crew with Seamasters, then sell them on Ebay.

Why would a Rolex Submariner RN be worth 100K and an Omega SM300 RN, of which there are less, not be worth 50k? What is wrong with this picture? It is about time Omega caught up. Personally, I like the size and wear ability of the SM300 vs the 5517.

I think I'd be happier keeping this one, and putting the other $72.5k into property! ;)

You're assuming an RN Rolex is worth 100K...

    Really, neither makes any sense.

My grandmother used to say that an idiot and his money are easily parted... the buble around issued vs. non of the same model kinda illustrates that.

I feel like the relative lack of difference in appearance of issued vs civilian SM300's (only the T, fixed lugs, and issue number) make them less desirable than issued Subs, which also have different hands and bezels in addition to the T / lugs / issue number. Sure, the hands and bezel aren't enough to make me get one (even if I had $150k to spend) but at least you can easily see it's a different watch.

You see a similar effect with other watches. My Dodane type 21 for instance is probably worth about £1000 less than an issued one. Even though the only difference is the service stamps on the case back of the military one.

The easiest way to raise the prices on the Omegas is to pay $100k each for a few of them. Have at it! :D

Somewhat of a common baseball term meaning it's a pitch out of the hitters zone. Sometimes used when an item is over your budget.

It's actually more related to the wheelhouse of a ship and being within the competency of the captain of the ship - fitting for a thread on an RN watch...

I would call the use in baseball sort of a second order use.

    Cheers, Al

Even the actual issued RN SM300 has not reached so high at auction, it was more in the 19k range IIRC.
But when I see an outlandish price like this, I don't take it literally, I see it as inviting a hidden auction behind the scenes, and by setting this ridiculous price the seller is just making sure no one will actually buy it through Ebay and force him/ her to pay those commissions.

Not quite: this one went for $85K USD all in at Bonham's earlier this year. Not to say that this wasn't two guys from the "Issued" / VRA crowd in a measuring contest, but the price is consistent with that sale.

Ok - It just goes to show that I'm more familiar with baseball than ships :)

I believe the baseball derivation of the idiom is primary.
"Wheelhouse" is of course a nautical term, but the idiomatic use of "out of his wheelhouse" to mean "out of his comfort zone" derives from baseball. Here's a wikipedia article.
