I remember a previous thread where we discussed leaders taking flack for wearing expensive watches. Would we have our president wearing rags? All they get are boring suits and dresses these days anyway. Who cares if a president wears a DateJust or even maybe a, *gasp*, President... Sounds like Peru has a habit of impeaching and imprisoning its presidents. A job best avoided.

What happened to the good old days when a world leader could just flex.

P.S. I thought smh.com was going to be a joke publication. Funny domain name.

Just come across this news story of how the president of Peru is facing possible impeachment for "permanent moral incapacity" and "illicit enrichment" because of her luxury watch collection (which includes a number of Rolex). Local police apparently raided her home in search of said Rolex because she failed to declare ownership of them...

That bitch! 😁

When you run your platform on social reform, social justice, and social equity, showing up with a few Rollies might be seen as out of touch.

Jokes aside, I get it. Not a good look. But also, it's her business what she spends her money on. There's a difference between out of touch in the public opinion, even getting impeached for it, and getting your door rammed down by police searching for your legally owned property. Assuming the watches are all copacetic. It's pretty wild.

What I find interesting is that the article stated that the salary of the president of Peru is $77,000 a year. Yet the Rolex she was spotted wearing was valued at $27,000. It's a fair chunk of your income to be spending on watches. Unless the watches were gifted to her. Or her income was a lot higher before she became president.

It would be a bit more serious if they turned out to be undeclared gifts, no?

Edit: upon reading more carefully, it seems the implication is 'illicit enrichment,' which definitely sounds more than serious than looking hypocritical flaunting your wealth in public.

Yea, it seems she was supposed to declare them but failed to do so. Oops. I still say, "Let them eat cake."

I wonder if JFK declared this one...

But maybe he didn't have to because Omega is an entry level brand 😝.

Interestingly, Marilyn Monroe gave him a gold Rolex Day-Date (President?) for his 45th birthday with an inscription on the back. He reputedly told a staffer to "get rid of it". Don't think he'll be declaring that one in a hurry! 😁

Before she took the presidency (which happened a bit by accident, she didn't see that coming), she was a director of a government public registry agency, perceiving around $45k per year... so no, she had no reasonable arguments against the allegations.

Not a great position to be in while you claim to be defending the poor brothers and sisters...

I really wonder if anyone would've noticed if she had a JLC or Blancpain 😎

If true, I wonder what happened to that watch? Value-wise, it might be up there in Paul Newman territory.
