ROLEX SUBMARINER 5508 HELP

The pictures of a Rolex Submariner 5508 with gilt chapter ring dial was sent to me by watch agent. Owner swears its in all original condition. I have checked other 5508s ( of similar quality to the one offered ) for sale on the net and prices are very inconsistent. This particular watch is offered at $20k. Is the price reasonable? Any red flag? Thanks.

I researched one of these last year, and am by no means an expert, but it looks very good imo. I could be completely wrong...possibly newer lume pip?

Great looking watch.

With the not so great pictures looks in pristine condition. Looks all original. Excellent gilt dial/hands, bracelet, bezel..
As with due diligence, you want to pop the caseback and look at the movement and inside the CB for a model/date stamp. Also take into account service history on the price..
I would question if this particular model came with a red triangle insert or if that is even a red triangle (check to see if just rubbed off). Again, not the best picture.
As mentioned, pip looks replaced.

IMO is a little bit pricy... but looks in good conditions for a watch that has what? 60 years?.

I think the two pictures do not do this watch justice. Looks like a very nice original and pronounced chamfer.
If you search available sites, the asking prices range in the $28-45K. A couple of these are polished to oblivion..
There is one other listed at $17k, head only but the case was cut about 1/8th+ in its lifetime..
Good luck !

Thanks for the comment. My watch agent told me that the acrylic glass is badly scratched but the dial is in very good condition. The case, he said, looks like it has not been polished. He is arranging for me to see the watch in person next week. By then I can take more photos of the watch including the inner case back and movement.

My sole questions is if you have a watch agent why do you ask here? Isn't the agent paid to do all the homework? So do we get a cut of his fee?

😗 😉

Maybe it is a watch picker...although an agent has a nifty sound to it.

My watch agent is also a watch dealer and his expertise is more confined to modern watches. When he encounters a vintage watch for sale, he takes photos and sends it to me. If I am interested he arranges for me to view the watch. Other than that, the sole discretion of verifying the authenticity and originality of the watch is my responsibility. This is why I seek the comment and opinion of members of the OF because I believe that there are many here who are more knowledgeable than myself. We are dealing with a lot of money here so all the help I can get from this great community is more than welcome and highly appreciated.

"Agent" has a more expensive sound to it! 😜

You should have come back with "I thought you were only asking 1 question - that's 3." and dropped the mic / exited the stage. ::psy::

I wouldn't dare make any assessment based on those pics. A serious agent would have sent hi-res scans of the dial (full front) and many angles of the case and crown. Looks good from this angle but that's all that can be said at this point.

Cheers,

You would think after all the business you have put through this bloke - it must be hundreds of thousands of $ - he could have at least got a decent camera phone by now .....

At least he is getting first dibs on it, as he is given the chance to see the watch next week.
I am sure it will not disappoint..

Very true indeed. He has found me great watches which has cost me a bundle too. Is there a rehab center for watch addicts?

Maybe it is time you contact a watch agent that has knowledge of vintage watches.
You spend serious money, so getting a serious watch agent seems the right thing to do.

I enjoy hunting rare pieces down by the way, the fun seems to be gone when someone else does that for you?

I live in the Philippines and there are not many dealers here of vintage watches. If you hunt in the national classified ads or local internet want ad listings, you will hardly find high end vintage watches being offered. Most of the time, sellers of, let say, known vintage Swiss brands will go to a pre-owned watch store that specializes in high end brands and offer their watches.

There is a place however, here in the city of Manila where it is sort of the clearing house for used watches. About 100 stores that deals in used watches, watch parts and watch repairs are housed in one small area. This is where most of the used modern and vintage watches are brought by sellers who want to dispose their watches quickly. This is also where I have dealers/agents that knows exactly what I am looking for. If they call about a certain watch which I don't like, I pass it on to my other watch collecting buddies.

There are also a lot of foreign buyers from Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, etc.. that hangs around in the area and compete in buying watches with the local shop owners. Many great watches have passed thru this place. Stories and pictures from the old time shop owners about rare watches that they bought and sold before can really get you excited or saddened because you missed out on a nice opportunity.
