I passed a closed watch/clock shop in West Sussex and noticed a sign advertising a Rolex Sea King complete with box and papers. I'd never heard of a Sea King before and checking the internet gives me a few entries showing it to be a genuine Rolex limited edition and also a made up version put together by a chap who wanted to make a few bucks. Has anyone in our Rolex group seen or heard about this model ?

Yep. I have heard it described in pretty scathing terms by a professional auctioneer who suggested that some shady practices were used to build an over the top price precedent early in its existence. I see your second description as more accurate personally but I believe that the respected specialist Milton have one so they can't be totally tosh.

I understand that the case back work was done in the UK so not by the factory but acknowledged by Rolex.

They was to commemorate 40 years of service and end of service of Royal navy Sea King Helicopter from memory 123 pieces in total and its a Gmt master 2 Ceramic with a fancy case back. But other than the caseback it is just a normal Gmt Master 2. Folk want top money for them but there not numbered editions like 1 of 123 on the warranty card its hand written Sea King limited Edition :(
As the story goes they approached Rolex and asked for 200 pieces with a fancy case which at the time was £500 more than standard Gmtmaster if I remember correctly, in they end they bought 123 and I have seen them for silly prices!!
