Rolex Ref. 1601 - concerned on spots on dial

Hi

I am interested in acquiring this piece but I am a little concerned on the spots on the dial. Is this how white 1601s get patinated?

1601’s with perfect dials are not rare at all and easy to find.

Unless this one is dirt cheap, it would be a big pass for me 😀

Probably a sign that the clear coat layer is peeling and lifting. That watch is probably at least 30 years old, and this is probably to be expected. I have an Air-King that is likely a bit older than the subject watch, and it suffers from the same problem. If the rest of the watch is in good shape, this is only a cosmetic problem. The bezel is either 14-karat or 18-karat white gold. That will likely be a factor in price.

I have a constellation that is doing the same thing (although not as badly as this one)- probably from moisture creeping in from a bad seal at one point (humid sweaty day or hand washing).
As said above, these watches are not rare in the slightest and near perfect examples are plentiful. If it were in the $2k range and you can live with a little wabi-sabi, then go for it. Otherwise, another will come along in short order.

That damage is not appealing to me. While it may happen to some dials, in general silver 160x dials can hold up very well, and there's no need to settle for that one unless you are dying for that particular no-lume T SWISS T dial, which is obviously a bit of a curiosity. These photos are not very good, but here is my early 70s 1603, and you can see that the dial is pretty clean, which is common for watches that have been cared for properly.

Here is my aforementioned Air-King with a similar effect. The dial may appear to have lint on it, but there is no lint. This watch is 50 years old, so some aging might be expected.

And a 1978 OPD with a near flawless dial and was a daily wear by the last owner for 30 years (marks in the pic are on the crystal)

Hey, what size is your wrist? I’ve been looking at this exact model and I’m falling in love with it and about to buy it haha. I have 7 inch wrists and definitely not at all opposed to 34mm case size but curious if it feels/wears small.

I’m 7.25” normally but 7.5 when I get fat (like now). 34mm seems small in comparison to the 44mm behemoths that are around now, but if you wear smaller watches daily, you get used to them quickly and they don’t feel small- in fact they are incredibly comfortable and you don’t even notice they are on your arm. Plus the OPD (and Airking for that matter) are chunky suckers so they seem larger than they are.
My 34mm late 90’s Airking;

in the summer months when I roll my sleeves I tend to wear larger watches. But in the colder months with long sleeves and sweaters (or if your job requires wearing dress shirts), these smaller watches are perfect.

Sorry for the thread hijack OP.

Thank you thank you! I have the same swell lol from 7 to 7.25 (like right now) and your response helped! The smallest watch is own is a 38mm Seiko And it’s really comfy.

The Rolex would be even smaller and sometimes it’s hard to picture that prior to buying. One of the biggest factors drawing me to that size is how unassuming it is. This one has been sitting in my cart and I honestly love the patina’d second hand. Seeing your photo today basically sealed the deal for me haha.

My second hand looked like that when I got it. I had it replaced with a NOS hand when I had it serviced (he also cleaned the funk off the dial which was making it look dull and lifeless).
Before:

after:

36mm is the iconic size for Rolex, but I love these smaller references- they just feel “right”.

That’s incredible! Did you send it to a local (to you) watchmaker or somewhere else? I’ve been trying to find how easy it is or readily available parts are for this series.

I had a friend do it who is very watch savvy. Parts are readily available on eBay or a good watchmaker would have their resources. Rolex won’t sell to anyone without an account anymore but these movements were so abundant, and parts so available once upon a time, they are out there.

Hot damn! And a rivet bracelet 🥰🥰

Got it serviced a few months ago and watchmaker remarked that by it’s condition it had most likely been sitting in a drawer for past 50+ years
