Not that (m)any of us will be able to get (or afford) one… Im not a Daytona fan but this is quite nice. In a world where the ease of converting coal/petrol to CO2 (vs the difficulty/cost by several orders of magnitude in the reverse conversion) and the problems that brings, i do not understand or support Motorsports…but thats digression, and this is simply nice wrist candy. Inspired by the 100th anniversary of the 24h Le Mans, the chronograph hour counter counts to 24h… Made of white gold. Link. Pic. Edit : I wonder what it costs (retail, not scalper)…
Actually quite like this. The Le Mans nods are subtle but nice touches. What are the 2 dial variants? I thought there was just 1? But I struggle with the rolex website!
I only see one dial option. The other dials available to choose are standard options. Selecting the other dials, you loose the 24 hour totalizer, unique bezel, and other unique features. Looks like $51,400
In a world where many watchmakers are trying to emulate Rolex, seems Rolex is emulating Omega with this one.
Thanks for posting this, but they could have and should have done so much better than that, without completely replicating the original.. And why is it white gold, the original was a tool watch?
The minute recording subdial is so weird, with the preceding and anteceding marks for each numbered index missing. The standard dial types actually seem much more aesthetically coherent in my opinion.
I like it a lot and would love a solid gold watch. Wish I was made of money sometimes. My only nitpick is I’m not a big fan of the squares at the end of the sub-dial hour markers.
Agreed! I think even Pagani managed to do a better job using this similar style crown guard case and screw pushers and the ceramic bezel insert: and they even got the numeral fonts looking significantly better:
I had a feeling I was probably criticizing some foundational design element. I don’t know anything about Daytonas other than you can’t buy them. Don’t love the piston jawns.
I think it’s fair to say the ship set sail long ago on the Daytona being a “tool watch.” However, as Rolex is “celebrating”** by way of a special release, it makes sense it is precious metal. **It states at the top of the linked product page: “Rolex is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours”
Interesting that it gets a unique movement, the Cal 4132 with the hours subdial geared to 24 hours rather than 12, wonder if it will get used beyond this one reference
There is a reason why the exotic Paul Newman style dial is rare…. they didn’t sell well back in the day due to what was considered a less attractive dial.
No professional model Rolex (Sub, GMT, Daytona) can be considered a tool watch any longer, even in steel the pricing precludes that. Every Rolex is now a cult object that is generally not available to the public even in its simple lines like a steel Datejust. It's not all Rolex's doing, as I've said said many times the manufacturer doesn't set the street price, the market does. Even at the very high prices these watches trade for Rolex can't make enough to satisfy worldwide demand, and they may never be able to do so. There are hundreds of millions of people worldwide who want, and can afford, a Rolex, but a million Rolex's a year is just a drop in the bucket to satisfy demand. I'd hate to be Rolex management. As far as this design is concerned it seems very weak, it doesn't pop out like a real Newman dial.
