The article suggests there are a couple benefits of buying pre-owned from one of their AD partners: surety that the watch is real, a service, and a warranty.

Is this much different than what a buyer already gets from any honest watch dealer? The only difference might be a Rolex warranty if a watch is outside the factory warranty. However, many watch dealers offer a 2 year warranty, as well as guarantee authenticity, even for watches without a factory warranty.

This program sounds like it mainly benefits the AD resellers, rather than Rolex. It gives the resellers an official stamp of approval that they can say their competitors don't have. Rolex gets a payment for the partnership, but the dealers get the marketing.

The article may just as well read, "flippers, bring your Rolex to 1916." No judgment on 1916 or Rolex, this is just a business ploy to get more inventory. There are plenty of first time buyers with no knowledge other than they heard Rolex is the best, but who are nervous about getting taken. If anything, the article tells me that the 1916 company is stepping up their game. It doesn't seem to change much else in the watch world.

I for one do not like Rolex ADs being unable to supply new watches at retail prices but having a case full of used watches priced way over retail. This reflects even more negatively on an industry which seems to thrive on huge profits at the expense of the consumer.

This exactly. They have even less incentive to sell what they have now if they can just fill out the papers with last year's date and slap an extra x% on top. Or sell to a mate, hold for a year and then slap the extra % on top.

My local (ex)Omega AD has given it up and is now concentrating on the used Rolex market.

I've been in the basement in the Rolex main dealer in London and had a look at a Comex. Also visited Valletta last month and viewed an over restored 1655. When I asked about what papers will be supplied both stores said "Simon we give a warranty card and authentication" I asked about original accessories and paperwork / certs. Both stores said "No, due to original purchaser privacy we do not supply original papers". Right, so a 1974 1655 and no original items and not an agreeable price. they are not going to sell many watches to the kind of intelligent and thoughtful people we have on these and the classic watch forums - people who appreciate the history, the stories and like minded friends in the world of vintage timepieces. Just my view.
