Following the choice made by Jörg Bucherer, in the absence of direct descendants, to sell his company’s business, Rolex has decided to acquire the watch retailer, which was until now an independent entity,” the statement reads.

Bucherer’s management will remain unchanged, but the company will be integrated into the Rolex group operation once competition authorities have approved the takeover.

“This move reflects the Geneva-based brand’s desire to perpetuate the success of Bucherer and preserve the close partnership ties that have linked both companies since 1924

Wow, this is a very interesting move from Rolex, since up until now, they've only had one corporate-owned boutique, which is in Geneva.

Dang! I wonder if stock will be allocated differently for all these boutiques.

Gonna be interesting because Bucherer sells a lot of watches from the competition. Can’t really see the stores moving to just Rolex/Tudor, because the stores in Europe are quite large.

So Rolex might be making money off selling Omega, Cartier, JLC, etc.

Smart move for Bucherer. Wonder if Rolex really had a choice?

That's interesting.....was in Bucherer in Luzern in June, not a Rolex in sight for sale and they get multiple Rolex shipments per day. I guess Rolex thinks there is money to be made selling higher end watches from other makers, and they are probably right. They also get some production capacity from the Carl F. Bucherer facilities (25,000 or so). Let's see how this all plays out.

So rather than having ADs with no stock, they're going to have their own shops with no stock?

Big buzz news for Europe.
Quiet buzz for USA.
Deafening non-interest from the rest of the planet.

Talking of Rolex watch shortages.
Anyone interested in buying my immaculate complete set Rolex Stainless Sub no date 114060.
It's in stock, in my safe, ready for delivery.
If you're in Oz, you can wear it on Tuesday.
(Once all standard buyer/seller transactions have been completed).

Hey, I was at that very shop in 2008 on my honeymoon! Back then, I do recall that they had plenty of Rolex watches for sale. My wife was more interested in the PM pieces with diamonds and we oohed and aahed at how much they cost. Sadly, all we left with was this souvenir spoon...

But it does demonstrate the strong relationship that Rolex has with Bucherer.

Yes, and to reinforce that, the spoon was a subtle reference.

If swatch group does it, it's very bad. If rolex does it, it's very good.

Nowadays I think that rolex is like kawasaki heavy industries. The watches are a hobby.

A company like Rolex benefits from having a more direct relationship with its best customers. It allows them to create a specific experience and more completely control how their brand is perceived and presented. This greatly helps in that and likely stems from Rolex perhaps being concerned about their lack of retail experience and the challenges of starting boutiques for a brand of this stature from scratch.

Why not simply use an existing infrastructure where many of their clients already shop as a starting point…

Agree. And better still, through owning a reputable and sizeable multibrand under its own name, it also allows Rolex to get to know part of your major competitions' customer base too.
