I have a nos Alaska project which, in all honesty, I don't wear for fear of it losing its value. I've always wanted a GMT ( the 16750 seems in a similar price range) and have been thinking of trading one for the other, if it can be achieved. It's not like I'm short of watches to wear and the wife is already giving me the "you told me you bought that as an investment " speech. It just pains me to see it sitting there when I could have a watch on my wrist.
I am not familiar with the Alaska project market, what are the asking prices? Curious to see how the values align..
I don't think you need to get corrected, the market in different parts of the world are different. I am sure selling one and importing to your country has tax implications. I think it is a tough trade, two different brands and periods of production. A vintage and a modern with limited release. Negotiating prices are better with cash versus a trade. Nothing wrong with testing the market. Best of Luck!
Interesting proposition. I like the Alaska project, but the GMT market as of late has been on fire (much like Speedmaster). I don't think you can go wrong either way, depends on your collection and what you want to get out of it. From my experience, NOS is a tough pill to swallow for reasons you mentioned. Good luck with your decision.
Depends what you are looking to get out of the trade. Do you want a complete set? Do you want a mint condition example? Would you be happy with correct parts and a daily wearer in average condition? If your answer is the last one then you might have a similar value in trade. As @ATWG mentions above, the 16750 matte dial market has been shooting straight up recently so if you want to do this I would suggest doing it rather quickly.
Ok, then as I know the US market the best I will estimate you could find an all correct daily wearer from a reputable seller for just under $10k if you are persistent. Not sure about the market overseas, but here the matte dial version carries a pretty substantial premium to the gloss WG version.
The 16750 as a daily wearer is a superb watch, the NOS route is one of those things that sounds great in principal until you realise that if you wear it the slightest knock is costing you, it ends up becoming an ornament. A 16750, full set or however you want to buy it, is most likely going to be a watch that although worn, has a value. That value should hold and will hopefully increase, and the watch can still be worn. This is the beauty of a lot of the vintage pieces, they aren't pristine and are generally there to be worn. If it was me I wouldn't pay a premium for full set either, its a nice to have but doesn't enhance the wearing experience. edit: so I'd vote for the 16750
