The Omega Speedmaster needs little introduction. It is one of the most talked-about chronograph watches in the world — at least here on Fratello. But as strange as it might sound, the Speedmaster doesn’t please everyone. Maybe you don’t care about its Moon-going history, or perhaps you don’t like the shape of the case. There […]

I believe @Robert-Jan that your Breitling facts are a few clicks off. I believe Carpenter wore a Cosmonaute, Reference 809, becoming the first Swiss wristwatch or chronograph worn in space. (Before that, I believe John Glenn had worn a Heuer stopwatch, strapped to his wrist, on his Mercury Six flight, on February 20, 1962.) I wouldn’t conflate the 24-hour Cosmonaute 809 with the Navitimer 806, especially since Carpenter specifically chose the 24-hour watch over the Navitimer for reason that there is no such thing as “day” or “night” in space. (Understanding the dials themselves had various nomenclatures, I believe those with 24-hr movements were consistently described as 809 rather than 806 models - and in any event a specifically rejected 12-hour model would seem improper to describe as being the watch used in space.)

There are no alternatives. Only pretenders to the throne. 😀

Even the Squirrel, who hates the Speedmaster, would agree there are no alternatives…

While I find myself in the camp of 'there are no Speedmaster alternatives' I think this was a nice round up of other interesting modern chronographs with a story to tell.

I don't know if it is the font of the numbers, or what, but IWC chronos always look a bit cheap to me. I've really wanted to like them, but just can't get there. The Sinn is a unique alternative, I wasn't aware it had a space pedigree on that model.

The IWC and Daytona to me aren't even proper alternatives. Currently all the watches you mentioned are luxury pieces that have no function at all. Like a Land Rover on 24 inch street tires... But to me if it doesn't even has the function where it initially was made for it's rubbish.

Chronographs are timepieces that are made to show specific time results. So you need an easy to read dial, very detailed second track and pointy hands. If it doesn't even has the minimal basics of it's original function it's imho not even a chronograph.

Zenith chronos are better value IMHO

They are almost twice the cost too... I'm not sure that's better value. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have one, but to me an article about alternatives to the Speedmaster should be concentrated on alternatives that cost less, rather than more. Otherwise what is the point of an alternative?

"A great alternative to the Rolex Sub is the Patek 5711...."

I was talking about the older Zenith Rainbow Chronos, not 2022 Zenith...
