Reverso trade an Explorer II?

I figure this is probably a better place to ask than the actual Rolex forum. Just looking for some thoughts on those that own a Rolex Explorer II.

So I’m not in a place right now to go out and buy a new luxury watch outright which I’m okay with. I could however sell my medium Duoface Reverso and fund an explorer ii.

My current core collection is a hesilte 3861 Speedmaster, a Duoface medium reverso, and 2231.50 Seamaster. I enjoy wearing all three of these regularly and generally will wear one at a time for a period of weeks before switching.

For some reason I’ve got this itch to get an explorer II in exchange for the reverso. I’ve always loved explorers. I’d have to get rid of the reverso purchase fully. So that would make my collection rather sports watch heavy.

Logically I know I’ve got a great little collection that doesn’t lack much. Each of those purchases was made intentionally with a fair amount of research and thought.

Yet I still have that Rolex itch that’s not been scratched. In 3-5 years I’ll be back at my old job which provides a substantial amount more of disposable income due to overtime.

So if you were in my shoes what would you do? Let the Reverso go to get an explorer ii? Or just be happy with what I have and don’t mess with a good thing? Then when I have the funds in a few years pick up the explorer ii?

I think it depends on what you want to use the watch for. I personally loved my old Exp 2 and plan on getting another one soon. It is a very under the radar tool watch (esp the black dial) that works perfectly for everyday wear. The Reverso on the other hand is much more of a dress watch and would be less versatile in my opinion. With your collection, you could go either way. I'd take the Explorer 2 over the Reverso but they're both great watches.
What model and dial color were you considering?

One needs a dress/sport watch and the Reverso does that brilliantly. I’d trade the Seamaster for the Explorer.

I don’t see how anyone can answer the specific question other than you. It’s your collection, you know what you like and what you don’t.

People can offer an opinion on the relative value of each and whether it’s a good deal but otherwise it’s purely subjective.

As nice as that JLC Reverso is, it's not something I would wear. I had a 5-digit Explorer II and regret moving it on. I'd go with the Exp II.

I like the idea of wearing one watch a time for a few weeks that accomplishes everything without worrying about it. I know the Reverso doesn’t fit that role and will switch it out before I do manual labor and such. Right now I’m leaning towards the black dial 226570. Although the movement gives me pause over the 216570.

You’re completely right there. Never hurts to see if anyone else has been in a similar predicament. Logically I know the right answer but much of this hobby will sometimes defy what the logical answer is.

Agree 100%. I see no point in asking strangers on the internet questions like this, but it seems to be the norm on many social media platforms.

That, and the “is this watch too small/large for my wrist?” types of questions.

You’re considering trading a Reverso you no longer love for the E2. They’re very different watches, so I’m assuming you’ve already tried on the E2 and like it enough to seriously consider the trade.

I’d do it.

There’s no point in holding onto watches you don’ wear. I’d even go a step further and include the Seamaster toward the E2. You’ll end up with a tighter collection and a pair of daily grails, you actually enjoy wearing.

Everyone I know who owns an Explorer II loves it. Funny enough, a lot of people I know who own a Reverso have thought about trading it at some point.

Since you already have two other watches with prominent numbered bezels, the explorer 2 seems redundant. How about an explorer 1. I think that would be more complementary

Whether or not you should trade/sell the JLC is entirely up to you, but if we're throwing out ideas what Rolex to get I'd suggest the Explorer II 16570. Five digit references generally look better than their six digit counterparts IMO. And I'm probably in a minority of one saying this, but the black dial 16570 to me is the best looking sports Rolex out there (though I admit possibly equalled by the 1675/16750 and apart from the 1655 which is a very different price range)

These are nice problems to have 😄 Seems like you'd lose a little versatility from the collection if you gave up the Reverso in favour of an Explorer 2. The Speedy, Seamaster, and Explorer 2 all fulfill similar roles. As others have suggested, would you consider swapping out the Seamaster for the Rolex? At the end of the day, go with your heart. Nice collection BTW.
