Retro Omega Watch

Hello Enthusiasts,

I bought this watch because I was looking for a quality unique dress watch. My parents both had omega watches. Each have been passed onto my brother and sister.

I initially was looking for a WG or platinum Diamond Art Deco watch but in my price range the dials were in bad condition.

All I know is that this is a sapphette. The bracelet has kunzite stones set and on the clasp it’s stamped Hadley RGP. There are no markings on the back or on the crown. The dial only says Omega. Is the watch case gold or gold-filled as that will determine how often I will wear it and how I will clean the other surfaces.

thank you!

Here’s a picture of the back. I cannot open the back to look at the interior. I don’t have the tools or skill set to do that. I’m afraid I will destroy the watch.

As I’m writing this message, I’m thinking it may be the definitive option is to take it to a watch repair place.

Well what I was wanting to know isn't clear in that photo, the reflection is so bright.

Is the back gold or steel? If it's gold you may have a gold case, the inside of the back will say. If it's steel it may be gold plate or gold filled. I gotta confess I know next to nothing about ladies watches.

Thank you for the information! I will treat it was gold-filled, not use any cleaning abrasives and will not wear any bracelets with the watch.

Even if it were solid gold, I think it is best to preserve the sharp lines, and edges on the case and decorative features.

I have never seen a watch that was sold by Omega as one of the Sapphette series, that was NOT karat gold. Karat content is usually 14 or 18 karat, depending on the market. Decades ago (mid 1960s) I worked for an Omega dealer. All Sapphettes then, were karat gold. Gold filled Sapphette? Could be I suppose. Maybe the OP could have the watch checked out as to gold content. Only way to be certain.

Hi,

if it’s precious metal, I would suspect, there should be a stamp on or around the lock of the bracelet. As bracelet and watch seams not matching.

The stones in the bracelet, at least the green and reddish one could be agate.
It seams they are carved like egyptian scarabs ?!
That was a (cheap) fashion in the 1970s, at least in Europe.

P.S. Maybe somebody got this as 2 pieces from the estate of their grandma and just gave it to a jeweller to make one memory piece out of it?!
Just a guess!

As the jump rings of the bracelet are not soldered to the case, it would be quite easy to change the bracelet to another one!
If You want to, though!
