Just looking for a little advice. My grandfather gave me his old Omega. The crystal is scratched and has a crack and the case has a little wear but other than that it looks and works great (except the band). A local shop quoted me $250-$500 to service it and replace the crystal. I'm wondering if I should keep it as is or pay to have it cleaned up. I've been told through this forum site that it's a 1954, 14k gold filled. Also (not looking to sell, but) what's the value of this watch? image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

US domestic market produced Omega automatic, nice movement, definitely service before wearing it. $250-500 isn't unreasonable as long as they're good.

Tell the watchmaker to go easy on the wheel of death (polishing wheel).

I would replace the crystal and service the movement but not polish the case, just a good clean.

Any thoughts on the strap? Brown or black leather?

I like that idea. I sort of like the aged look anyway and it's not really rough as is. Thank you.

My thoughts on strap colour for a gold colour watch are based on the dial, hands, and indexes. It's a personal decision, but a watch like yours with gold colour numerals and hands, I think looks good with either brown or black leather. If the numerals or markers and hands are highlighted with BLACK, then I suggest a black leather strap.

Maybe a nice dark brown, almost black looking. Thank you.

Amazing how well these hold up. I can't imagine buying a watch today and seeing it in this shape 60 or more years later.
