Hi. I'm currently restauring a cal. 321 of 1968 and need a reset spring reference 321-1734. The position and image of the part is enclosed. Could anyone be of some help ?
    Thank you very much.

I believe the part is 320-1734.
Make sure it’s correct. The 861 spring doesn’t fit

You are not the only one who is looking for the hammer spring. There's no short cuts here, you just have to keep looking.

What would cause that to break?

Is this not the spring which can be replaced by a paper clip?

The part ref. 1734 fits cal. 320 or 321. No problem.

Thank you for your answer. I'll keep looking but need to try all the possibilities.

    Please do not try.
I was referring to an old thread were a dealer sold a Speedy with a paper clip replacing a spring with out disclosure. I am still in awe at the simplicity of the substitution, but do not consider this an acceptable restoration solution.

Yes, but just be aware that the proper part number is not 321.1734 as you stated, so if that's what you are looking for, you are making the search more difficult than it has to be because won't find it.

Common parts virtually always revert to the earliest movement to use them, so it will be a 320.1734.

    Cheers, Al

It might be obvious, but searching eBay (for example) using the term "Omega 1734" gets a lot more hits than searching for "Omega 320.1734" or "Omega 320-1734." Eleven of the hits are hammer springs (no 320 or 321) and 60 are Timken bearing races. Better to cast a wide net than a narrow one, though.

Yes that's completely obvious, but the thing is "1734" doesn't tell you much, so as you found you will get examples of 1734 that even if they are Omega parts, won't necessarily be for this movement.

In order to get a part for an Omega 320 (or any movements based on the 320) you need the 320 prefix (unless the part is specific to a later model in that movement line). This is how watch part numbering systems tend to work, so for example if I need an escape wheel I could search on part 1305, and I would find many parts, and some will be escape wheels, but not necessarily the one I actually need. A movement part with 1305 is an escape wheel, but the movement prefix before the part number is what tells you it's for a specific movement.

The point I was trying to make to the OP was that searching on 321-1734 is restricting yourself to finding a part that doesn't actually exist - searching on the wrong number gives you little chance of finding the part you need.

    Cheers, Al

These do occasionally come up on eBay.

Best of luck with your hunt.

Edit: to add, I think Cousins sells an aftermarket version of these. You may try there, if you're OK with aftermarket.

I do recall the last time we went around on this that someone said that Cousins were out of them, but might be worth a check. This is also a part that could be made in a real pinch.

However last time I checked there, there was a run on these (i think from the last time someone came here asking about them), and he was down to very few. Worth a shot though. Blake is a good guy.
