    Hello all,

I am just starting to learn about vintage omega watches and have been reading the forum for a while now, but this is my first post. There are a number of watches on ebay that have caught my interest and before I make a mistake, I would like to ask for some help in evaluating them.

The first is a 2757 and I am wondering if the dial is re-finished. The guilloche dial looks quite clean and not as ‘pronounced’ as others I have seen.

The next is a 2627. Should the Seamaster script be included on a dial with the square date window? Lume, positioning of ‘Swiss Made’, crown and the hands also concern me a little, but that could simply be due to a lack of knowledge.

Another 2627, but this one looks more correct? Is the price reasonable?

And another. This time the date window is a different shape and the second hand is a different color to the others.

    Finally a 2761:

    Any comments very much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Paul

    You have excellent taste.

Best part: no glossy black dials anywhere in sight!

I'd estimate that upwards of 85% of black dial vintage Omega's on ebay are re-paints right now. More than half of those listings aren't full disclosure and use language like "original dial, watch signed 5x's" to trick novice buyers.

These glossy black dials are like smack to a junkie for new collectors: they can't resist nor do they really want to. They need a glossy black watch and dishonest sellers are having a field day re-painting every watch in their inventory. They're getting $800 up to $1300 for a formerly $300 watch which is now basically a $150 parts watch

    /end rant

it looks like this guy has been cleaning out his omega collection and he has great watches. mostly mint examples and all original. take a look at what he's sold and you'll get a perfect picture of the market right now.

you could also message him and see what he's still selling. I bet he is...

    Thanks citizenrich,

Looking back through the sales history is very informative. Some lovely watches there, none of which I noticed as the seller would not ship here.

I would like a black dial for the collection at some stage, but one of the things I've learned reading here is how difficult it is to find a good one. A black dial can wait until I have a better idea what I'm doing.

The 2761 you posted is one gorgeous watch. She's perhaps spent a wee
bit too much time at the polishing wheel but personally I could look past that because that 2761 is a super beefy case.

the lugs on that watch look like Victorian era doorknobs. The gold applied dial furniture jumps out at you on these honeycombed dials. It really is a perfect combination.

if you're not stuck on getting an auto then I would buy this one. €499 could be a bit ambitious. If it gets close to the end of the auction and there aren't a ton of people watching the listing then you might get the seller to negotiate
some. Or, you could just try snipe it at the end so you don't get caught up in a potential shill game...(

you won't go wrong with that watch at the beginning of a collection. Might wind up being your favorite watch at the end of your collection.

    good luck.

    Thanks again.

Absolutely not stuck on getting an automatic and the gold dial furniture does appeal to me. Appreciate your input on price too.

I agree with Rich 100%. The 2761 is the pick of the bunch, it's a pity the seller has started the bidding so high. It might as well be a BIN. Try a 550 euro snipe at the end if nobody else has bid. I have the same two-tone guilloche Seamaster dial as this (different case) and it is a peach -

I think the dial on that watch has been repainted and the hands are wrong too. I took a look at another watch from this seller and it was problematic as well: wrong hands and wrong movement even though he said "The movement is authentic, as you can see in the photos". The photos showed it had a wrong movement!

The crown is correct for a 2627, it should be the "bowler hat" style as here. However, the dial has certainly been re-lumed, the hands are very corroded, and the 353 movement looks pretty tired. The case is very worn and/or polished. I would say the price is too high for the condition.

Thanks Dablitzer. Yes it does have a khaki colour to it, probably more so than I was expecting from the original ebay listing.
