Replacing Speedmaster case back: lube, or no lube?

I get the idea that the case back threads are near the gasket, and materials in the oil could degrade that. But why not a silicone lubricant? Are these always reassembled with dry threads?

I think the Silicone Watch Grease is what is normally used for the gasket. dont think you need to oil the threads.

The only time lubrication is required for case back threads, is with materials that are highly prone to galling. Titanium is one (if the maker actually uses titanium on both parts - many do not for this reason), and platinum is another. For stainless steel, gold, bronze, etc. you are fine.

Thanks, this makes now because as a kid, the bike shop mechanic always emphasized that you have to lubricate your steel pedal spindles when mating with aluminum alloy crank arms. I thought it was because the torque spec. was generated with lubricated surfaces, but maybe it is/was both.
