I wanted to get the crystal replaced on a 2998. Neither the crystal or bezel have been removed from this watch since the early 70's. There is already a small piece of the bezel insert missing on the inside edge. After such a long time can the bezel insert become joined or 'one' with the side of the crystal and in removing the crystal is there a risk of doing more damage to the bezel insert.
No, the insert fits inside 2 edges of the bezel, it never touches the crystal. Insert is painted aluminium, bezel is steel, changing the crystal should not effect either.
Thanks watchlovr, but just to cover all the bases is there any possibility that a buildup of dirt could cement itself to the insert and at the same time the crystal and when the crystal is removed the insert paint comes away with it.
There is one for the 2915, 2998, 105.002. I believe the crystal is the same for all speedmasters. Early watches have a white ring, later the black.
Hi Rich - I think the transition from a silver crystal tension ring, to the black crystal tension ring, takes place around the -dash four CK 2998 reference, but I'll have to check my notes when I get home to be sure.
