I’m new to the forum and poked around quite a bit before posting so I read up on what to look for to spot fakes and bad restorations. I know I’m going to get some backlash for this question since it’s pretty much forbidden to polish and repaint such a rare watch as well but wanted a second opinion on the quality of this polish and repaint. The crown is also not original but the price is right

To most here, the quality of the redial and polishing is immaterial as the collector value is shot to hell. How do you think it compares to original examples? Could you live with it knowing the issues? Would it make more sense to save your money for a better example?

Sorry. Accidentally posted nothing there. I think you’re right from a collector perspective. I would eventually want an original example but I’m still inclined to buy it for the mere fact that it’s so reasonably priced. Is that stupid of me?

Since I don't know the price, I have no idea how stupid it would be.

Not necessarily. Just make sure you're pricing it as a fashion item and not a collectable item. I'd probably not go over $150, $200 if it was love at first sight

[IMG]With a $1200 budget you can do so much better. Patience. You did well to come here BEFORE you bought.

I only mean that it's reasonable compared to other Rancheros on the market. When they're so much cheaper I guess it's for good reason.

I don't think this is a Ranchero. I think this is a Seamaster which has been repainted and had Ranchero put on the dial.

Your are assuming it started its life as a Ranchero. Most likely it did not. If it did, that messed up dial moved it far away from the original.

This is one model that I liked immediately as a noob and quickly discovered that it is a mine field of expensive fakes. You need to be very very careful and when you find an unsullied watch prepare to spend ... were I getting started, this is not where I’d begin.

Related question about the reference number, what does the 4 denote in 2996 4 SC? I've seen the 2996 1 SC for the Pakistan Air Force but hadn't seen the 2996 without the PAF stamp. Is this another sign that it's a fake? Most of the Rancheros I've seen are the 2990 with the sub second dial. Sorry for all the questions but Omega's website doesn't offer much other than pictures and basic specs.
