Hello,

I posted a watch for sale in the private sales section and someone dm'd me because he thinks it is a redial.
I took some photos with my microscope , here is the watch :

He's telling me that the font is too thick to be original and here is his comparaison photo :

I reckon my model is original and printing may slightly vary depending on the factory who made the dial.
So is my dial original 😕

Thanks

I see no any issue with your dial, which looks perfectly original to me.

Keep in mind that there is different factory, and picture took with different condition may gives different result…

Fonts, serifs and spacing look fine, especially the "n"'s in Constellation

I would say original dial with these pictures.

The first one looks fine. I question the second one, however. I don’t recall seeing a dog leg constellation dial with only one single marker at 12. I think it should be either like the first one or a different marker style like this:

I must confess that when I saw you FS post I took a look and found it a very attractive Connie… all good to my eyes. One of the tells of redials is indeed font thickness (I believe the member who reached you out was only trying to help) but I would never have said yours is a redial

The only thing I would call out on yours is the crown is incorrect, even if signed.
Yep, it should have a decagonal crown. However even if I prefer the look of the original one, I find it very hard to manipulate 🤔

Maybe you should declare it in your sale ad so the not so experienced members know it 😀

Nice watch so good luck for your sale 👍

Interesting subject.

Very heavily serifed font.
Doesn’t quite meet the MOY test
The relationship between the right hand extremity of the ‘e’ in Constellation and the centre line of the star looks too close for a standard dial.

After noting all that, this is a very late 60s dogleg in an HF case.
It’s a painted indices pie pan and shouldn't be compared to earlier onyx inserts dials, which were likely produced by entirely different manufacturers.
Constellations produced at this time have the widest variations and departures from the accepted norm in dials of any period of vintage Constellations.

If it’s a redial it is exceptionally well done and I would agree with those above and offer the opinion that it is correct.

If this is a redial I'll eat my shoe. I saw this font often. I dont see anything wrong with it. Beautiful watch and well priced.

By the way, did you buy this one in Japan or Asia?

Too bad we don't know who this "helpful" person is so we can point and laugh. 😀

Yes, I think yours is original. His, however....

+1 on the second (comparison) Constellation being fairly suspect. It's possible it also has some non-genuine parts.

Feel free to point and laugh--I was the one who asked. The OP was extremely kind and considerate, and, when he sent clearer pictures, I immediately retracted my questions regarding the dial. On the first pictures on his listing—which have now been significantly added to—one of the pictures of the dial had what seemed to me the sort of tell-tale heavy printing of a redial. With more pictures, it's clear I was wrong.

Still: absolutely. Point and laugh. As far as my comparison 168.005 being suspect: if someone has something specific to note about it, I'm all ears and, as this post makes clear, I'm certainly not an expert (I'm currently digging into the note from @seekingseaquest about the 12 o'clock marker).

I don’t think there’s reason for pointing and laughing - yes, the OF has spoken and the results are clear but to me this went pretty perfectly: There was interest in a watch offered here and uncertainty about the originality of a dial, the seller himself asked the community about his piece and the person asking the question was transparent, too. The verdict is positive, some people will have learned something - should be smiles all around. 😀
