Seller identifies this as an old redial. The hands look relumed, and the moonphase looks redone, but the dial itself, while really clean, looks good to me. What do you say?

yah thats what I thought. it was listed at $6950, seems a bit steep. I was going to make an offer yesterday but the redial language was giving me pause, and then it sold! %^&**&*%$

would you agree the hands and moon phase are redone or do you think those are original?

Hands relumed, looks good ! Moonphase is very bright, could be original, do they even refinish moonphase dials ?

In my limited experience the eyebrows and nose should be one connected line. However, I'm not sure if there is some variation within authentic UG moon faces. Here is what you normally see (this is an illustration rather than a photo, just because it's easier to see)....

    moon-orig.jpg

but there is ONE example in Sala where the nose and eyebrows are disconnected, and it looks pretty similar to the watch in question above. However we can't be sure the example in Sala is original UG.....

    moon-question.jpg

So I wonder. Its a bit beyond my skill level with UG. Whenever is see a moon phase with blue paint, and disconnected eyebrow/nose, it gives me pause. Often times it's really obvious when its redone, because the face is totally different, but in this particular example, I don't know. Anyone with more knowledge, your input appreciated.

It would be cool to do a thread just on the moon faces, but it requires really good, high res photos with the moon phase in the correct position, which is rare....

As far as I am concerned, a hands relume (which is likely that they are) if done correctly using a vintage tint, is acceptable. I have seen a batch of old 40s-50's moonphase disks in mint condition. I got there late and missed out on them. They came from france and were still wrapped. That could well be one of them. I have never come across a repaint. However, anything is possible.

Dean's probably, right, the bright blue ones are NOS. Most are in varying levels of fade.

Rolokr thanks for posting your pics, there's definitely some variation, do you think all the moonphases are original? Your first one for example is a variation which looks similar to the first watch I posted. Where as your fourth example (and others below) is what I think of as the "classic" moon face.

Dean, in terms of never seeing a repaint, I'm not gonna say they are common, but I do feel like I come across them regularly. I will see if I can pull a quick few examples off the web.....

come to think of it, lets start with the one that someone just posted in another thread.....
    moon-A.png

    here's a few others.....

    moon B.jpg

    moon-C.jpg

whenever I come across these variations I have just been assuming they are not original, but I could be completely wrong. Certainly the first watch I posted gives me pause, it's very clean, and its not hard to imagine there would be some variation in the stock UG moon faces. But these last three I posted, I don't know, seems kinda wonky. I've definitely seen more, just don't have time to track them all down at the moment.

    fascinating stuff.......

I think the last ones are from other brand vintage moon dials, so they are on the Franken side ?

    @bgrisso

Here is how this watch looks when 100% original and untouched ! (Service dial from UG also!)

    Have a great day,

There is a whole thread on this very subject. Bubawatch commented on factory furnished originals, printed in the 60s/70s. It is a very interesting thread. Look up redials on OF ...
