Red star questions

Hi, I’m new to this forum. Just bought this omega red star at a pawn shop. Haven’t been able to find out much about it. Watch person I use looked at it in side and said it was clean and didn’t need service. Case on back is blank. Inside case I was told it only is identified as 17 jewel. Watch person said it was a 1944, but they may be confusing it’s actual year with its teddington movement which is related to the year 1944. The thing that seems unique it the red pointer on second hand. I’m wondering if it is non original as I can’t find another line it on internet. Anyway, interested to learn more about it if anyone has any input. Thx jimmy

Seems odd that your watchmaker said it was "clean" and didn't need service. Probably needs a service for a start. These red star examples are always minefields. I'm no expert on these of course but it's something to be mindful about. It seems that the dial has also been repainted at some point. More members will chime in with opinions.

"Red star" was a marketing gimmick from the omega factory. Has nothing to do with the testing at Teddington. Just a repainted dial. And, yes, the center second hand is not Omega.

Hmmm. Thank you for your response. In the limited research I’ve done , red star denotes sold in Brazilian market , and has the same movement as 1944 teddington winner. So could you possibly elaborate on this. FYI paid $200 for watch, pawn shop owner did not seem to have looked at it too hard.

I would be concerned that the case is not made by (or under license from) Omega. There should be some kind of brand marking there.

With no movement pictures, I have no clue what it is or whether it was made by Omega or not.

I hope you have a return privilege. I don’t have good feelings about this one.

I guess it could be a Brazilian case, but it's really hard to say much since the dial appears to be repainted and you don't show photos of the inside.

I don't know what "cal. #280" refers to, but the rest of it is correct. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, ref 2479 is for an automatic winding watch (with a seconds sub-dial), so the dial and movement don't belong with that case, or at least that case-back. Given the mis-matched bezel and sweep hand, and repainted dial, I think it's likely that the whole thing is put together from parts. Nothing wrong with that if you got it cheap and it's running. Just enjoy it.

Cal. 280 is the “new style” designation for the cal. 30T2SC. So that makes sense.

But it is a major Frankenwatch.

Thanks, I didn't know that.
