Red Arrows 2014 Breitling LE02/15 at auction this week first team watch to surface

A pilot contact of mine is auctioning his limited edition Breitling this Thursday (link below). He is a really decent bloke, ex Red Arrow and recently retired OC of 617 Squadron, the Dambusters, and left the RAF earlier this year after a long and distinguished career.

It is one of the Red Arrows 50th anniversary pieces issued only to the team and key support staff in 2014. Fifteen were made and his is number 02 (he was Red 2 that season).

I first saw these watches during a visit to RAF Scampton in 2014. It was the 50th season with the anniversary tail marking on the Hawks and the team were carrying out a three aircraft practice. I got a quick thumbs up as they taxied past which stayed with me because these watches were clearly part of that season.

The watch itself is the PVD coated Transocean automatic chronograph, reference MB0150, running the in house Breitling B01 movement.
This is the first and only one of the fifteen ever to appear on the open market. He wore it throughout the 2014 season when he flew as Red 2, including during an engagement with King Charles.

Wow! Now that's a great provenance! I do hope he's not selling to relieve any necessities. A private sale to a suitable permanent collection would be so nice!
(Btw - don't put me in the Tower, but I'm not impressed with HM/HRH's suit...)

100 years ago, in 1925 during the British Empire Exhibition the RAF - Royal Air Force flew its first display ever ... but the first official Air Display team was founded in 1956 (next year = 70 years !).
In late 1964 the "Red Arrows" team was formed, performing first air display on 6th May 1965 ( 60 years ago ).
In 1996, Breitling introduced a Chronomat ref. 13050.1 as a tribute to the Royal Air Force’s Aerobatic Team, the world-famous Red Arrows.
The caseback of the 1996 model is engraved with a side profile of the Red Arrows’ BAE Systems Hawk T1A, along with the years “1965-1996” to commemorate the team’s first public performance up to the year this watch was produced.
To highlight the year of their first performance, 1965 pieces were made, with each caseback bearing a unique number.

Breitling have had a long association for sure and it is easy to see why. Selection for the Reds demands a frontline operational tour and a standard of flying few ever reach, I read at times they fly as close as six feet apart, reaching speeds of up to 450 mph with closing speeds of around 700 mph, impressive by any standard. With Scampton now closed and the Hawk nearing the end of its service life, the future of the team is uncertain. Given such a long and proud history hopefully Reds will continue flying and inspiring crowds for years to come.
