Can any forum members recommend a good watch repair/service for my 1935 Omega? It's losing about an hour a day and the winder is quite stiff... :-/

I'm happy to recommend Christian Dannemann - he's working on my own 1938 Medicus at the moment! ([email protected]) And I also rate Roberto Fachini ([email protected]). Both are good, attentive, and honest guys.

Thanks! Can I ask what (roughly) he charged for general service?

Well, I don't have any affiliation with either guy, so can't really estimate what they might charge. But Christian is the slightly more expensive of the two, in my experience. He has a blog called 'Watch Guy,' which shows the various overhauls he's working on. It's very enjoyable. Roberto's skill is that he also does dial refinishing and his experience in this can be an asset. (Do I hear hissing out there at the possibility that from time to time a watch needs to be refinished????)

It's hard to say what a 'fair' price should be, isn't it? But my experience is that around about £50 is a typical, non-specialist watch repairman minor overhaul price, lube and check. Adding parts such as the ubiquitous main spring will add to that. For someone to really strip it down, ultrasonic all the parts, that seems to come in around £125 typically. If you look at the Omega service schedule on their website, similar service costs are in the region of £500. Both watch repairmen I recommend are essentially giving you trade prices; you'd pay double that at a jeweller. The London-based guy I used to use won't open a vintage watch for less than £150 now, more for any Omega.

Do you get what you pay for? I don't know the answer, but I would stand behind either of the two guys I suggested, who have both done lots of jobs for me and are very straight. Don't be shy to ask them, both are very friendly and well-balanced guys.

Wow - thank you so much for all that info! :) I saw the watchguy blog. Very cool! And FUI I have nothing against refinished dials if they do a good job, why not?! Thanks again for everything!

Hi - I can also recommend Roberto Facchini who has just restored a '62 Omega for me and has done an incredible job.
