Ok so second attempt , I tend to be wordy , then realize
No one cares about my life and delete everything. Decided to take out about 6000 on a 401k to buy a speedmaster professional, ive slways loved the history and size , in college I had an Explorer II and always thought it was too small , current my daily is a lunar pilot , I love the watch . Almost bought a split second because I really like larger watches and they can be had for under 3000 but id also like a solid investment , looks like they arent loved all that much, and I really want to stay with a manual wind , however the schumacker legend and the moonphase are making me think twice . Any suggestions on models sellers and price at all would be helpful , I know its all opinion and probably asked many times but I like having others opinions

I'm going to get the ref. 310.30.42.50.01.001 as it's the closest to my pre-Moon 145.022-69 ST. Hesalite crystal, manual wind movement, solid case back, step dial, DON bezel. I plan to buy new at the same AD I got my green Seamaster a couple of years ago. They offered by far the best price, used, gray, or otherwise, and I had zero relationship with them prior to my purchase.

So many choices. You looking for vintage or new? Some "neo-vintage" references are nice and more affordable- from 80's and 90's. Might even find a nice pre moon 145.022 -69 for that price as well.

Im thinking new at the moment , but the pre moon is intriguing. Im back and fourth all day , part of being on the spectrum I guess , almost bought a brand new one from Japan last night

I’ve got both pre-Moon and brand new … I like them all. I think you definitely need to do some research and reading and decide what features are most important to you. Is it the “vintage” look of a tritium dial? Is it the accuracy of the “master chronometer” movement ? I know it’s hard to avoid an impulse buy, but don’t rush into anything.

One data point: I bought my newest Speedmaster — the cal 3861 — used. It’s the 310.30.42.50.01.001, which has the solid back, the Hesalite crystal, and the micro adjust bracelet. I included the full kit, was less than two months old (the warranty cards are dated) and is pristine. It was being sold by a guy who had bought it and then decided he wanted something else. Without going into pricing, I can tell you that I paid at least $1,000 less than what my local dealer was charging at the time.

I think there are two morals to the story: 1) if you’re not wedded to buying new, keep an eye out for these kinds of deals, because they do exist; and 2) don’t be the guy who takes a loss because he’s overcome with buyer’s remorse.

I was similarly undecided between new and vintage Speedy. There are good deals avail now for near new 3861 and you won’t need to worry about service
I would suggest 3861 as first Speedy and if you fall in love w it you can always branch out to vintage later. Keep in mind service for vintage Speedy will run around 750-1000 depending on parts.
The good news is can’t go wrong if you take your time and get a good example.
Good luck w hunt!!

Here’s a nice 3861 hesalite 2022 with papers from good OF seller good price
No connection w seller btw

You can't go wrong with this listing or something similar. Fantastic watch and a bargain for what it is, even at full retail in my opinion. I wouldn't view it as any type of investment though, newer Speedmaster Professionals don't go *up* in value or ever sell for more than retail.

Agree w above. At this price were you to decide to sell in year or 2 I don’t think you’ll have trouble recouping your cost.

took forever to find a second to sit in from of my laptop, Ive tried replying to posts on my phone and I just can't text anymore with out a million mistakes. Im not sure yet. Iven been back and fourth , last night I almost bought a new watch "2023" for 4900 inc shipping from Japan, this morning I was ready to buy the Tokyo now I'm looking at pre moon speedsters. My favorite to wear would be the Tokyo, I find it stunning , but it 2 thousand more. I was also thinking a used speedy and getting a used seamster. Watches have been a passion of mine since I was a kid and I sat on my grandpas lap as he did repairs , Im a super amateur horologist, I can clean/fix you clock but ill screw up your watch lol .
Id like to slowly build a small collection and be able to sell it off at retirement , I hate watching all my money go into a 401k that I may never get to collect on, Cancer had made really paranoid about this .

right that's kind of where I'm at and why Im considering the Tokyo, I can buy a new speedy on chrono24 from Japan for 4900 "2023" or a 2024 for about 5200 with duties still under 5500 or so. Maybe I just need to be less cautious .

Pre-Moon is my choice. My 145.022-69 ST was my first Omega. I love the Moon and space story background but I don't need it emblazoned on my watch, even if it's only on the back. While vintage watches are cool, the patina is neat, I'll sell my 145.022 as I'd rather have one I can wear like a new watch, with relative abandon, which is one of the reasons why I pursued a "Watchco" SM300. In the end, the step dial is my favorite feature so I'm glad Omega chose to include it on a modern Speedmaster. I'd really like to find a plain case back for the new watch.

Haa that's ok I figure after duties I could still be around 5700 for brand new or get a 2023 for

omega-speedmaster-moonwatch-co-axial-master-chronometer-hesalite-crystal--id24688229.htm

2023 new under 5000, figure about 5500 after all duties

Im just looking at being able to sell later later like 10 years.. plan is to start buying and trading then when I need to sell for retirement.

I wear a Bulova Lunar Pilot as my daily I love it , I had an explorer II in college that I wore daily , big mistake , however I remember how nice it looked when it came back from Rolex after my wife put it through the washing machine ,
did you send a picture/? some reason it didn't come through

No picture but here's one on the likely original ref. 1039 bracelet.

Any of the pre-Moon watches are great, but the ones from the very end of the 60s have the look of the later Speedmasters and the patina of a vintage watch.

I want to replace it with this.

Probably put it on a Forstner flat link.

Likely not what you want to hear, but taking out of a 401(k) for anything, let alone for discretionary items, sounds like a very ill-advised idea.
