    Hi guys,

Excuse my ignorance, I'm a beginner and I've just purchase my first watch - a seamaster 300m. I love it but I have one question, when I shake my arm or move it quite a bit (if driving or something) I can hear a bit of a rattle coming from the inside of the watch. It doesn't feel like somethings loose in there, just something thats rattling. Is this fairly normal for this type of watch?

It's not the rotor spinning around... Is it your first automatic watch ?

The Guy below cracked me up years ago....

I would describe the SUBTLE "KLICK-KLICK" sound like a "small glass ball moving inside a metal tube, going from one end to the other"

Normal? If you have very sensitive hearing, there is a chance you may hear something you may not expect. But some rattles are very discernible, and could be serious. Rotor post broken or rotor bearing gear badly worn being at the top of the list. You should have it looked at. But do NOT take it to the watch repair counter at your local department store! Talk to the guy who is actually going to fix it, if repairs are required.

I am no specialist of Seamasters 300m but I think the noise you are hearing is the movement winding itself

edit : Or just the bracelet endlinks on the lugs

Its the rotor winding the watch. Some designs are more noticeable that others re: self winder awareness.

Could be normal, or could be abnormal. Very difficult to say just from a description, and not knowing any other information about the watch.

For example, if it's a used watch that you just purchased, and is say 10 or more years old, and the seller didn't say anything about it ever being serviced, then there's reason to believe that there could be a problem. If it's a brand new watch from an AD, then it's mostly likely normal rotor noise.

    Cheers, Al

Thanks Al, it's a brand new watch....I'm assuming its the normal rotor noise but I've never had one before. It's only really when I shake it a little bit...

    Hi Standy,

yes it's my first automatic watch. I'm clueless :)

It's working perfectly, and I've only just noticed it, just seems weird for something to make a rattle noise when you shake it - usually that can mean somethings not right but with no experience of these watches what do I know!

To Al's point though...Is this brand new from a boutique or AD? If so probably nothing to be concerned about. If second hand from private seller then I always assume that it needs to be serviced.

Maybe the rotor bearings aren't adjusted correctly and it's clanking against the mattaman.

Google "Automatic watch rotor noise" and watch a few videos and see how it winds itself and listen

    Enjoy it ,it's normal

Sounds like the bracelet end links moving a bit and touching the watch body. Take a look on the slack on this one.

Just wait till you add a bumper automatic to your collection, could cause cardiac arrest at times.

I’m a bit disappointed with this end link issue, or non issue according to the AD. I would have expected a better fit and finish on this watch. Mine is Seamaster 150 but same complaint as the original poster of this thread.

To me it looks like the wrong spring bars are being used in this watch...

What about on a watch like mine, brand new AT8900 direct from AD. Is a bit of play on the end links (that may be perceived as rattle) normal for this watch?

I’ve had this happen on my GMT- used generic 1.8mm spring bars and the endlinks rattled and fit was poor- it thought it was just the way they were. Got some appropriate 2m spring bars and whoa- what a difference...still a little jingle but that’s what they are supposed to sound like- Christmas!!
