can anyone give me a ball park guess as to how much this thing is worth? My late grandfather passed it down to me. I think it's from the late 60's and 18k gold.
I'm not planning on selling it so not sure if I'll actually take it to be appraised by a jeweler or what not.
I have no clue if its worth 1,00 or 10,000 but am just curious.. any intel would be appreciated. Thanks IMG_6990.JPG IMG_6991.JPG IMG_6992.JPG

Unfortunately not a style prized by collectors, so its not worth much over melt value of the gold.

Jewelers appraisals are not worth the paper they're written on since very few have a clue about vintage watches, don't waste your time.

Melt value plus maybe 10%. And agreed that appraisals from jewelers are pretty much useless - proof of that is that they will purchase it from you for maybe 20% of the value they just appraised it for.

ok, good info thanks XJR. just to give a little more info on what I do know: the numbers on the back say 353.013 I've googled everything I can think of about this watch and I've yet to see one exactly like it out there on the web.. I wonder how much it's worth?

thanks MSNwatch.. no appraisal it is. Can anyone throw out a ballpark number? I find it odd that I can't find this watch for sale anywhere on the internet.. am I looking in the wrong places or is it really that rare?

It's uncommon but not sought after. Many examples of these have probably been melted down at least partly due to low collector interest. And the value is in how much gold - so calculate how much 24k gold there is and that's your ballpark value.

Dont forget to discount for the movement.
You dont have 100g of gold in there!
It is one of those classic examples of where a replacement would be almost impossible to find, (and therefore expensive if you comissioned someone to find it!) but by the same token, just as hard to sell - other than scrap value.

Scrap value will be about 10-20% less than the gold value - the smelters will need a margin.

thanks Spacefruit, yeah you're right about not accounting for the movement.

Yeah, value in the future is hard to predict.

I remember a time that Beanie Babies were going to be the ticket to many well funded retirements. And probably 35 years ago Speedmasters were just a nice watch for a guy.
