I did not know either , I have never seen one before.
I posted the watch to Longines yesterday for authentic verification. And I'm waiting to get an answer if ref 7970 ever was made with a chronometer version.

I hope this is the real thing if it is, its truly a rare watch [emoji6]
Have you changed the plexi glass? Or did you have luck to have a very nice ex of this watch ? What ref is your bracelet ?

Or you could get a watchmaker to pop the back off to see if the movement has the gold plated rotor characteristic of chronometer certified movement or email Longines archival dept with the movement serial.

The plexi on mine is a new service replacement. Bracelet is the original Longines that came with the watch, will get back on the ref no.

Interesting - ywould be wierd for someone to go thru all that effort to doctor the dial and swap in a chrono rated 431 movement.

The archival ladies couldn't determine the authencity by using the serial no?

Exactly what i thought to , maybe some one with no life much time and no friends, come up with something like this [emoji12]

Nope they wanted the watch in place for examination and to get a 100% authentic opinion. If it's authentic I would get a free authentic certificate from Longines. So i will not see the watch for a couple of weeks until they are done and post it back.

Nice snag! It's authentic as far as I know. I've seen only one or two other chronometer calibers in this reference. IIRC, one had the more modern detuned 66x1 inside.

If you want a great one-two punch of rare Longines from that era, try to find a chronograph with the Vernier second hand.

Great ! Vernier second hand chronon looked great, hope it exists in steel , not a fan of gold [emoji2]

Do you think the 7970 increases in value with it chronometer achievement, compared to standard non chronometer ?

Or is it same same on the market ?

It does. I think there were 2 or 3 different case styles too.

It definitely increases. Chronometer rated Longines are much more sought after. I can't quantify how much more it commands, but I know I was willing to pay a couple hundred extra to get my U-C chronometer.

Here is a 1970 Japanese catalog showing the standard ref. 7970:

Chronometer versions do not seem to be mentioned, but if the were, I couldn't tell anyway. These looks like watches where there wer marching men's and ladies' versions. I wonder if the ladies caliber also came in a chronometer version.

Let's see what Longines says, but all looks good to me.

There isn't a ref no, but it's branded Kestenmade Bambi.
