Hmmm, is it? It was also my believe that the 2914-1 only had a complete clean caseback without any engraving. BUT I do have one other example in my archieves that is the same as the ebay one. And the ebay one does look correct in terms of engraving etc., both inside and outside. Can't see any trace of it being fake or redone in any way. One swallow doesn't make a summer, but ... So perhaps, they did came with and without seahorse etc. Just like the 2915-1 ! Which until recently also was thought to have no seahorse variant.
Thanks Kim. I wonder if perhaps an early 2914-1 or 2915-1 owner was able to send their watch back to the factory for more engraving? They discovered the newer references were seamonster engraved and wanted their "1" to be like the rest?
Perhaps Marc, but more likely Omega just upgraded the design of the caseback, so that the Hippocampus from the marketing material and box, also was found on the caseback (remember, the seahorse was their new waterproof symbol, which was introduced with the trilogy). I think it's a matter of production timelines and timing here. How long did the -1 casebacks/production last any way. I haven't see a 2913-1 with seahorse and production stopped around march 1958. The seahorse was found on -2 and -3 from around march and forth. I have seen 2914-1's confirmed produced into may 1958 and 2915-1, well, really no reliable extracts on them it seems ;-) But since the 2915 only had 3 subreferences, againt 8! on the 2913 and 6 on the 2914, I think the 2915-1 was somewhat longer in production (don't have MWO on me right now). So I find it reasoanble to believe that the general switch towards seahorse casebacks was made on late production 2914-1 and 2915-1 ... a theory anyway
