I noticed this on eBayPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network (well, I actually have a search for them ) and have some reservations about the watch. First listed for over AUD$1000 it's now below that amount (just). Overpriced in my opinion. The front view raises some questions about the dial. Non-radial numbers. Blobby minute track. No Swiss Made. The size of the dial (crystal distortion?) And other little niggles. The caseback at least is a 2179/3 with US Army stamp. I know a few of us are interested in this model so I thought if I raised the issues I could either help somebody or prevent a newbie from falling for an imperfect specimen. So if the following would care to comment and put my fears to rest? @gatorcpa @UncleBuck @mac_omega And any others who'd like to chime in.
Hi Jim, I also follow the 2179 pieces and as we know they rarely come with perfect dials. But this one has clearly a re-done dial. And the winding crown is awfully wrong... these special crowns are made of unobtainium and hence very expensive if they are offered by knowledgable part sellers kind regards Erich
Wow, horrible condition. If it's yours you better let it go... Here on the forum... At a time suitable for GMT+1 timezone...
The first one- sorry for the ambiguity I have owned 4 US Army Omega's but have passed all along to other collectors. All mine were stamped US Army on the case back
I should clarify.....dibs if it has the engraved caseback. That's a must-have for me. I know, I know, I'm 20th in line for a watch you'll never sell! I'm eternally optimistic.
Thanks for the reply Brother, what a beautiful watch you have (among many others). Has there ever been a blanket "dibs" before on a whole collection? You and Mike immediately come to mind.
@UncleBuck I thought you found one. They are still out there. I've owned a couple and regret selling one. I picked this up in a box of junk watches. My heart jumped when I saw it. I have to admit that the hunt is actually more fun. Taking this one to the grave.
I have to agree, I find them to be very grabworthy. I'm still after a nicer example (or two, or more). The one on the right puzzles me as the caseback has been skimmed on a lathe. To remove "U.S.ARMY"? Or to remove "To Humphrey, All My Love, Gladys, 1946"? Whatever, unless I get an extract I will never know. Anyway, @UncleBuck has first dibs on it, and if I shuffle off before he does, it shall be bequeathed to him in my will! (And he can pay for the extract ).
No, still looking. I want a nice dial and the engraving, can't seem to find both. Been sending pizza's and hookers over to @JimInOz trying to expedite a look at his (ours). So far, it's only been tough on the hookers.
