I decided to go, and have a look in person....about an 8 mile drive through Cheshire countryside

The more observant of you, will see in the central lower sub dial.....a whitish circular line, running parallel to the curve of the sub dial........ that could either be a scratch from the subdial hand, coming into contact, with the dial ?....or traces of white paint from the sub hand ?

Checking carefully......regrettably It is a scratch......and seems to go down to the metal

The dial is attractive with the beginnings of a tropical appearance, and the case bears the honest scars of a 'one owner' watch .......Which it is

There is considerable paperwork accompanying the original box, original guarantee, operating instructions, and invoices for repair work in 1975, & a service in 1984

The bracelet is a bit tatty,. but salvageable

The watch will definitely need a full service immediately...... as the Chronograph function works intermittently....when it feels like it

My question is : What allowance would one make in terms of price, considering the damage to the dial ???

    Your thoughts please ?

According to speedmaster101.com I would rate it as running. But it also has papers etc, which add value. I dont know much about the price reduction regarding the dial but its a really cool and classic toolwatch!

That's actually a really nice dial, the subdial scratch is unfortunately but easily overlooked in favor of the lume plots (possibly redone? Skillfully and attractively if so) and the tropicality. Bezel's nicely worn too, has quite a bit of charm. Bracelet, however tatty, adds as much as $2500 with the No. 6 end links.

I think it hits 20k US

How much of that is based on the case? Looks great to my eyes.

If I had a great dial and hands in a poor case... I see upside on this one.

I'm on the Wirral, so I might pop down and buy that - thanks for the heads up.

Only joking, but £10,500.00 at present and don't forget to add about 22% on in assorted fees and VAT. Then it becomes a project to get it in some sort of ship shape order. If you are looking to blow £10k you can buy my 1964 Ed White, which is currently with Simon Freese for a bit of TLC.

    This one seems rather expensive.

If the scratch is taken out of the equation, I see this as much closer to 'good' than 'running'. Putting the scratch back into the equation, it's purely subjective as to how much of a deduction to factor in.

This is an "excellent-minus" dial and passable hands in a really nice case, perhaps the scratch is worse in person than in photos but I think this one will realize its full value plus some upside for the brown dial and the bracelet.

I am curious as to whether the scratch on the subdial is repairable. Anyone has experience with this issue?

Thank you all for your opinions…One always appreciates others experience, & candour, freely given

To be honest, I had expected to be thrilled, and enchanted, to hold the watch……but in reality.....I was a bit underwhelmed

The case is more battered / gouged in reality……and, imo, …the dial far less obviously tropical, …than the images suggest…although the lume is good, and original

I have to admit to personally feeling pretty ambivalent about this Speedmaster …it simply just did not speak to me,… as my other pre moon 145.012, & 145.022 do

I am registered to bid, …however I suspect, I will simply be an observer… as it continues to rise in sale price

Very best of luck to whoever bags this…

    Thank you again

I was chatting to Simon Freese about possibly touching up a don insert to see if it was possible which isn't a million miles from touching up a dial. He said it was possible and they would try to get the best match, but his feeling was that the restoration work would be visible. I decided against it in the end, so I suspect that is the answer to your question.

A watch should wear its age scars honourably……part of its history !

As long as you can accept the visible imperfection, albeit tiny......thats the Speedmaster for you

I think you've hit the nail on the head though. On the pictures the case looks good, scratch aside, the dial looks beautiful and it's a good set. But if it doesn't have that something extra nor speak to you, you'll never be happy with it.
