Sorry fellow Canadian, I haven’t had the need or the pleasure. Good luck with the surgery and that it all goes well. Hopefully, someone can give you some insight into their experience with this clinic.

And yes everyone, sorry was my first word!

    Cheers.

You know it. I’m glad it went well for you. Im trying to avoid the use mesh. Although I know it’s common and standard in the US. Some recent studies suggest the greater incidence of long term pain mitigates the stronger overall repair from the open mesh techniques. Other studies suggest that the mesh repair is better if placed behind certain muscles rather than in front.

It’s dizzying....no guarantees. I’m probably overthinking this. But I’d at least put as much research into buying a watch :D

My dad, brother and a friend all had their hernia surgeries there. Top notch place for hernia.
Beautiful little hospital in a very nice location. Park like setting. They even have a pool table :D.

    Change the thread to

    Questions for our Doctor friends.

You would be surprised how many Dr,s we have here.

( There was a spot detected on a members arm in the WRUW thread once that lead to a positive result )

Update. Hi folks. Heading to Thornhil, Markham Ontario in June. Thanks to all who responded. Won’t be bringing any watches though. Plan to hit the hockey hall of fame when I’m there. That’s about it. Hope it goes well.

Thanks! Summer weather is part of why I waited. June will be lovely. I haven’t been to Canada in a long time. (Like could just enter the country with a drivers license long time) I’m looking forward to it. :)

Toronto is a world class city - Markham is a little outside of the centre of town so make sure to head closer to the centre when you’re feeling able.

    Good luck and enjoy Canada

Had a decent sized hernia about 15 years ago, Shouldice was my first option but ended up getting conventional overlap sew-up surgery here in Montreal, no issues ever since though the first 4-6 recovery months were not particularly pleasant IIRC!

    Good luck :)

Hi folks: just a quick update. I had my surgery at Shouldice. Highly recommend it if you are considering this hospital. I was up there two days before admission, right after the Raptors win. (as a Chicagoan I appreciate the hospitality of having a shooting at a large social event. It really made me feel at home :D:D:D).

I did to see a few things before, Jays Game, CN tower, hockey hall of fame. Good tourist things.

Three weeks out and the surgery went well. As @Toishome said, it’s a great facility. They really have it down pat. My surgeon had done thousands of these procedures, and judging by the scar, was meticulous if not downright anal retentive in his work.

If you are not Canadian, you pay up front, but for many in the US the cost might be less than the deductible on your health insurance and way way less than a three or four day hospital admission in the states.

If you’re from Canada, ask in advance as to what your provincial government plan will pay. I learned it varies.

I met many people from almost all the Provinces, and had a great time. Relatively speaking. If it weren’t for the surgery and post surgery recovery it would have been a fine vacation.

Now this post represents my experience only. We’re all different and your experience may differ greatly depending on your own personal health and medical history.

tl;dr: Shouldice hospital Markham, ON. 10/10 would go again for hernia surgery there.

Sounds like you had a good experience. I have not personally attended the Shouldice, but I understand it is top of the heap for hernia repair surgery. Do one thing, do it very, very well!
Also looks like you had a great Toronto visit. HHOF is one of my favourite stops!

As someone from Toronto but no longer living there, I’m glad to hear you had a great experience. It gets tiring hearing about how bad Canadian healthcare is from Americans who’ve never even been there. Btw, great shot of the tower, did you visit Steam Whistle Brewery right there? all the best with recovery
