Purchasing new Explorer II, have a papers question

Hi all,

Hope you're all having a great holiday break. I have a quick question about a Rolex watch my brother is planning on purchasing. Here is the story:

A jeweler located near our house has connections with many ADs across the country, and can basically sell you any watch you want for a pretty good price. My brother is purchasing the new Explorer II from him for Christmas. Originally, the jeweler said my brother's name would be written on the warranty card. However he now is telling us the card will not have his name on it, but will instead have three letter X's written by the name. What does this mean in terms of resale value? My brother does not plan on ever selling the watch but he would like to know whether this labeling will change the value of the watch and the integrity of the warranty. For example, will Rolex still honor the watch's warranty if the card has these X's on it instead of his name? This might be a stupid question but I figure I might as well ask. Thank you for reading, and again have a great holiday!

Agree with the above. In fact whenever I’ve taken a watch in they’ve never requested the papers as it’s all on system.

maybe that’s just me, but as long as the watch is genuine then I think you have no issues.

So as long as your name is on record as the original buyer there's no problem? What if your name is not on the records as the original buyer will Rolex still honor the warranty? It's not clear to me that the jeweler confirmed his brothers name will be on record as the original owner.

The warranty follows the watch - not the owner. As long as you have a card then it should be fine.

Not sure what the X's mean but it shouldn't make any difference unless it is some weird designation that only the Rolex mothership knows about, which is possible. After the 5 year warranty is over the card is only valuable as part of the original package. Wouldn't have any effect on the resale value.

Now, if it had Jon Voight's name on it that would be a different story.

What is the AD's answer to this question?

...now is telling us the card will not have his name on it, but will instead have three letter X's written by the name...

Your brother should consider Xavier Xu Xander as his new name....😜

Non sense IMO, I purchased my EII in similar fashion --meaning from a brick and mortar retailer who acquired the watch from an AD and I received the watch with all the paperwork and the name field in the warranty card was clear and w/o any marks...

It's fine. If the original buyer doesn't want their name, the AD has to write XXX so a future owner cannot write their name. In other words, they are not allowed to leave it open.

Not sure on this particular topic, but there have been several threads on TRF on RSC refusing service if it is known to have been purchased in a grey market. One of the indicators is that the card is not filled properly with the purchaser's name. My AD also informed me that they have to input data in the international Rolex warranty system at the time of purchase, and the system has to match the name on the card. You might want to clarify if "XXX" falls under this. To my knowledge, this is how Rolex determines that it is a grey market purchase if it is not registered properly, or registered at all.

It depends.... there is grey and there is grey. One is an independent dealer who have deals with us based Rolex AD’s . Those will either have a blanc warranty, or someone else and those will be honored by Rolex Warranty. Then there are grey watches that come from other countries in the U.S , those are usually not sold with the warranty card and Rolex will not do warranty work on those. Usually. Those grey dealers will have their own warranty. Having X’s is kind of strange, but it comes from a US based ad, I wouldn’t worry.
