I am just getting back into selling watches. My current strategy is (i) local contacts, (ii) offerup, (iii) forums, and if all else fails and I am ready to pay the the ebay tax, I need to decided between ebay, or putting the watch away for a future sale. I expect that I will avoid ebay. Thanks for posting this information, I just adjusted my strategy based on your input.

Cheers,

Don’t know how you intend to take pictures of them as your wife just sold your camera, your phone and I think all of your socks and underwear on eBay 10 minutes ago. I passed on the underwear- look forward to the socks though.

Did you hit my old concert T-shirt collection? She made a mint off of those. That was crazy I had no idea they were so collectible. When I misplace a watch I always check with her first but she is not malicious about it. Oh I’m supposed to get a cut of the proceeds but that was 6 moths ago I may need to write it off.

My understanding is that eBay never refunds the insertion fee (if any). As for the final value fee, if the buyer brings a case against you and eBay decides in the buyer's favor, then eBay will not return the final value fee. However, if you voluntarily refund the buyer, then eBay is supposed to be willing to refund the final value fee after the fact; however, you need to request it, and the buyer may be asked to approve it also. So if it's worth you time, you might want to look into it.

Thats exactly my understanding as wel

An additional hit, also new, I ended all my listings, one of them was an auction at $160, I cancelled all bids and ended it - nothing on the interface, then couple hours later they charged my credit card $35 - turns out they applied a $28.76 "End Auction-style listings early Fee" - this didn't show up on the interface like the usual extra listing fees etc. appear, so I assume it's new and I believe I should've been warned
This is not new. It's been around for several years at least.

Wow, good info and I’m sorry you have lost out in such an unfortunate way. Shame on the buyer though for opening a ticket—as a US-buyer I know that customs will always be slow. Hell, I have a watch from France that’s been sitting in Chicago for almost a week now. My guess is the customs officers are taking wrist shots with it because of how cool it is.

eBay sucks for a seller (unless you hate money), and a buyer too when you factor in taxes. I don’t sell there anymore unless I have a niche item, that I know I can’t sell elsewhere. With all of the watch forums and Instagram I’m not sure why people sell via eBay.

I sold a few items. It was a painful experience and was before the exorbitant fees. I read about these poor seller experiences and it makes me want to stay as far away as I can. I used to buy often but that isn't like it used to be. I still buy occasionally but it's only those rare, niche, low-production, hard to find items that come up from time to time .

eBay ? Just a cheap international marketing tool, if your name is known in collectors circles. Seller fees? Open the cheapest eBay store and it gets less. Charges ? Never give your credit card as a payment option. Remove it. Link to a bank account, that holds your sales money and as soon as it comes in, remove to another not linked account. Keep it low at $ 20..... If you buy, fill it before you buy. That way you control charge backs as well . Tracking problems? If you ship EMS, call them and open a case. That adds to your tracking history and then you avoid that 7 day rule .... Do the same with every other Shipper. There are always ways around ... Kind regards. Achim

This is incredible advice, just checked here and only the $27.95/mo package reduces the fee from 15% to 12.5% for Watches - with my volume it'll likely be not worth it

It's a bit too advanced and the bank account stuff I believe only applies to US and some other countries with domestic integrations, for international you have Payoneer now, for credit card charges, it makes sense to load a prepaid card indeed, I'll do that

For the rest, I guess a DHL agreement is a must, the 7 day reset is an incredible trick though, I'll look into it

As a bit of good news on my end, I got eBay to refund the fees they took, and talked to the seller, asked him to refuse the package on delivery yet he wanted to still receive it and pay afterwards

Pretty impressive how you have it all figured out, thanks a lot for sharing it

By the way, as an update to this story, I've just learned that I've been scammed - I'd tell people to be wary of an Edwardo Abadsantos from Canada, but I suspect it's likely a personna - the eBay account has since been removed as well

The post inquiry process takes around a month and it doesn't appear as an entry in tracking

After a month of investigation it was told that the item was originally delivered, I don't know how the buyer managed to not get it tracked, however I believe it's ultimately the fault of Canada Post, around the time of this event, I recall honest buyers getting confused by the delays and the inconsistencies

I have this fascination and love for the postal system and I like to trust government posts anywhere, with Turkey's post, PTT, I've maybe received/sent 10,000 packages in my lifetime and all of them was sent/delivered/accounted for - this recent event was a wake up call

I didn't think I'd have been able to, but I ultimately stopped selling on eBay as well sticking to my commitment, I do miss the ability to practically sell small watch related things though

For those who are in US, turns out there are UPS/DHL/Fedex resellers, I suggest buying legal/discounted tracking codes from them and using their tracking, but for internationals, such services sadly doesn't exist, their codes only work for US destinations

Ebay is a global flea market- many of us rely on the sellers having no clue. The best deals come from the pickers, not watch dealers. But you have to know exactly what you are looking at and be able to jump fast.

"The best deals come from the pickers" 100% right

When I find a good buy, I ALWAYS look at what else they are selling. If it looks like their closet I'll send a message to see if they are willing to negotiate. Most have NO CLUE what they have and they guess at price or just look up similar listings. AND, MOST just want to get rid of the stuff they are selling, as they usually have next to nothing in it and want to sell quick. Heck I do it too so I know the feeling. Once they understand I'm a collector and not a scammer, things usually go really smooth. They get their stuff sold fast, I get a nice buy. Win/Win.

DHL it is very good for use to send expensive watches because 100-150 Euro it's is acceptable when send a 3000 Euro watch but when you send a 300 Euro watch 100 Euro just for shipping it's to much ...

Sorry to hear that. For what it's worth, for us Canadians, Canada Post tracking is horrible. Absolutely horrible.

Bumping my own thread, I think fees increased again, up until very recently I recall fees dropping to 6% for the portion of a watch over $1000

Currently it seems 15% until $5000 and 9% over $5000

Even with a store account as per @watchyouwant's suggestion it becomes 13% and 7%

Pretty extreme fees even for luxurious watches now, another warning if anyone didn't notice this fee increase
