Pre-owned vs. New

Apologize in advance for this newbie question. I’m wondering about buying a newer preowned, say 2021, Speedmaster Professional vs. a new watch. The price differential seems to be about $1000 between an excellent preowned and new for the same model watches so I’m thinking that the additional time until a service is due and the extra factory warranty would seem to be worth the price difference. I recognize that everyone may have a different opinion on this depending on how dear the $$ is and how much one worries about need for service/warranty. Thoughts?

To me, new is worth it, but not necessarily at AD or OB prices. My hesalite 3861 new full set from a reseller was 1500 less than Omega retail in 2024.

The value added from the OB/AD experience is subjective. If this purchase will be a watch you'll keep forever, then it is worth it.

Unfortunately, it's a fact most Omegas do not hold value so if you're not sure about a particular model, might be worth buying on the secondary market at all discount and if you decide to sell it in the future, your hit will be minimal.

Personally, have bought a bunch of watches on the secondary market, a few at the OB. Not really missing much with the experience unless you're wanting a new release.

Or several new releases leading to the unobtainable....

$1000 savings isn’t enough for me to consider preowned in this case, especially on a 4-year old watch nearing the end of the warranty period.

I got my first Speedy 'used' for a little more than 1/2 price. At that point it is worth it. Otherwise, you have to determine whether 'making the first scratch' and 'longer warranty' is worth it to you.

For the service part, Omega will do it for ~$1000, so a $1000 savings is only worth it if you don't make it out of the warranty period you would have had anyway.

As far as 'make the first scratch', thats up to you.

Thanks for all of the replies. ignoring the “make the first scratch” concern, I’m leaning toward spending the extra and buying new just to delay a service by maybe 4 years. People must believe that buying current model preowned Speedmaster at these prices though as that seems to be the going rate (or maybe they’re only comparing to the boutique prices. Thanks again.
