I'm looking for a 1970 step-dial, and I don't want to get impatient and pull the trigger if there are better examples out there.
Strange, but I think they provided the wrong photos, as they do not really match the descriptions Dial lume looks horrible to me. I would probably prefer having the lume remnants removed down to the white markers vs leaving it looking so bad. And the movement does not look like it was fully serviced by a top watchmaker; it looks to me like they did not bother cleaning some of the parts. And a piece of wire is showing in the first movement photo that i am not used to seeing. I personally would only entertain these items if I knew I were going to have some work done to the lume and have the movement fully serviced. So I would factor that in to any potential bid I were to make.
Thanks, BT. I'm really only interested in the dial, but would buy the package, if the consensus was the dial was worth it...
I can only imagine the state of your current dial if you're considering this one. I'd certainly pass and wait for a better one.
The watch is a 1970 Speedmaster. The current dial is actually a service replacement from the 1990's (it kills me every time I look at it...). It was put on before I bought the watch, so I'm just trying to get it back to period correct.
I'd rather look at a service dial, and wait for a period correct one in nice condition, rather than rushing into buying a poor one. I can't imagine looking at the eBay dial everyday would be great for your health
Tty to imagine how the dial would look in light. If you think you are in despair now, then you have no idea what it will be like with this dial. Looks like it spend considerable time on ground of the atlantic In brief: be patient, you will get a nice one you like looking at. OF is a good place for it.
+1 That's money down the drain for a shitty dial. Rather be patient and spend it on a nice example. P.S. does it need to be a step dial? I thought 145.022-69 was the latest for step diala.
I am now comfortable with step dials on -74. The -74 is seen with both the no step and step dials, by -76 it is all no steps. A 145.022-74 showing a step dial
The watch is a 145.022-69 ST. My understanding, based on a previous inquiry, is that it was definitely equipped with a step dial. Serial is a 305*****.
I haven't. But then Spacefruit would have seen more 71's than both of us combined in our lifetimes, so inclined to go with him. Also, MWO...
Well, based on the comments, I'll try and be a bit more patient and pass on this dial. Thanks very much for all the commentary/advice.
Hey, no worries. Its called 'being human' And most of us are. Just for interests sake : according to the MWO, the painted logo C1 Medium-S Step Dial is found from '69 to '74, with no-step from '75 onwards ... and there are some applied logo dials from '60s and '70s. Seeing as the '71' caseback reference was produced till 74, this could explain why some 71's got a no-step dial...running out of different stock of different things at different times and all that...
