So while waiting for my speedie to get serviced (12 weeks), one can't help but look at the menu so to speak...

I came across this, and it looks mighty strange.

Pointers, case back, dial, indexes look mighty strange, as does the bezel. It's missing it's crown too. Are those pushers 2 different sizes?

What are your thoughts on this apparent 50th anniversary Speedie.

Fake or franken? Either way, it kinda hurts...

It's at an auction house so thought I may actually let them know what they have might not be what it seems...

Common fake. Been awhile since I’d seen it though.

Look at the sub dials. It’s has a date feature and 24 hour hand not Chrono.

 

Interesting... What kind of movement do these abominations have would you know @Foo2rama ?

 

It has the original "for all manned space missons" caseback...

That watch looks awful, I thought the dial was an aventurine one at first glance with all that dust.

The left chronograph says 5, 7 and 2 as well...

Total fake, it's a shame that people peddle these around and expect huge money.

 

Definite possibility of a firm maybe...okay it's a complete and utter fake. A very poor fake at that...

So I emailed the auction house and they a. had no idea and b. were horrified.

They thanked me and removed it immediately from the auction apparently. I thought that was a good course of action... But then again could've been a good way to discern the enthusiasts from the people who collect for no good reason at all/for status/to drive prices up (controversial facetiousness hehe )

 

The crazy part is that someone wore the heck out of the fake.

 

Considering it looks like the case is made out of pot metal, it may not have taken that much to make it look like that. And the easiest way to tell if a Speedmaster Pro is fake is the indices on 3,6,9 - they are always shorter on a fake than the other markers, when they should all be the same length. With this watch though, that detail was hardly even needed to determine its terrible nature :-D

 

Love that sub dial: 31 days hath September, April, June, and November.....
