I have shown this before. But recent events had me looking through photos of Racing Dial Speedmasters, and I came across this on the hard drive. recent sales of Grey Dial Speedmasters have been as high as $50,000 at Phillips but that was a fight between two bidders from 28k - normally they trade 20 - 30k and even that price is high compared to four years ago when I saw one trade from a retail vintage dealer for 13,000. I made it years ago, because I liked the look, and the whole cost less than a thousand USD - including a service. The MKII donor was a shocking mess from Ukraine - how lucky am I it was real? The case was lying around. I just noticed, as I trawl my hard drive for interesting photos, that the pushers are 105.012 and do I detect the vestiges of a facet line on the lugs? I am away but it definitely needs investigation. As far as I recall it has a caseback of 145.022-69. The bezel is a DO90. It cost $7 including postage from memory.
It's a poor man's alternative made up of (now) expensive parts....unless you a serial hoarder...cough cough... Any thoughts of selling it?
@Spacefruit ok fine, I'll give you $77 for it, I know that's a 1000% profit to you, but I've decided to start helping more people in 2017
Not a chance - gets worn all the time! Better photo And Original MKII, now long gone, with a case that had been over polished
I like the look of this scratchy bezel!! But I personally do not like the mark-Hands, but that my opinion only....
Have to be careful of people trying to pass those off too, there have been 2-3 that the MARK II was covered up on including one that even got recommended in a Hodinkee feature article (they issued a correction following that).
Take a grey mark pen and erase Mark II. That is what Omega did. And then you have a sane, not necessarily poor mans, alternative to a Speedy with racing dial, if you happens to fancy such a specimen.
I dont normally go in for modded watches. But, the combination of the dial and bezel look beautiful. Not having a spare $50K to buy the real deal, I would more than happily wear this watch ever day. Very 'easy on the eye'
Have you seen this this one: http://chronocentric.com/forums/chronotrader/index.cgi?page=1;md=read;id=62878 Just fore sale. Hands seem to be from a mark2 and the movement is very new, most likely changed.... What do you think?!
