I got these pictures from the seller -- they're not the greatest, I know, but these were after I requested clearer photos. He's offering it at a nice price if the watch is what it seems to be. I asked for info on the movement, so I'm waiting for that. What says the collective mind? Redial or just very scratched glass?
I'm no expert but have been slowly learning and my guess is it is not a redial just a bad crystal......but I am curious what the experts think.
^ Tend to agree, but at times it seems like the lower bar of the L of UNIVERSAL disappears, looks like UNIVERSAI. Not sure if dial damage or glass damage... crystal comes with original cyclops it seems, looks untouched
I saw that but in one of the other photos is seems to be visible so I assumed it was due to the crystal being scratched and therefore obscuring it.
Imho, dial is ok*. Here's a guide: https://omegaforums.net/threads/pol...-a-brief-survey-with-some-observations.35888/ The case back engraving has a good definition wich a good thing and not seen very often What value are we talking about? * The lack of a T after "SWISS" is a little strange but in the UG world nothing is definitive
Cheers for the link, that's some reading material for tonight! As for value, bidding starts at €250, so it depends...
I think it's a redial. Comparing it to mine (see pic below), you'd see that the one for sale has the following flaws: 1) The applied U logo is too close to the "Universal" line 2) The "S" on "Universal"is different 3) The Es on the "Geneve" seem compressed
I had started to answer this last night but decided that I had a little too much alcohol in my veins at that time. Looking at it again today, I come up with the same answer: redial. What confused me last night was the AUTOMATIC that seems right to my eyes but the UNIVERSAL doesn't. I find the distance between the U and the wording UNIVERSAL too close, and the font seems a little thin to me.
Thanks for all the replies, guys. The pics I posted were the ones I received after asking the seller if he could send me better close ups of the dial. These two are the only ones that were not out of focus... I don't think I'll get any better than this... edit -- the seller also seemed not to be aware of the kind of movement in it (I asked him to take a picture eventually, before that he couldn't say more than that it was an automatic movement). What attracted me to it in the first place is the seemingly original glass with trapezoid cyclops, which gave me hope it could be all original.
Thanks a bunch everyone! I really appreciate it. I'm thinking that on the examples I posted the crown could be aftermarket as well. The way I see it now by comparing it to the others: UNIVERSAL font is simply too big. That's why it's too close to the U while simultaneously the Geneve and Polerouter Date seem to be correctly positioned. EDIT: On second (more like tenth) look, it seems that instead of the font being too big the U is actually applied too low! What about the possibility that the U at some point fell off and was subsequently reattached? That would still make the dial original, just poorly repaired.
IMO, it's original. If it's a redial, it's one of the best. The date window is a trapazoid, very hard to find in an aftermarket. Dial is being distorted by a badly scratched crystal. The accent mark on the è in Genève is usually missed. The T generally is not there in watches made before 1963. If the crown is signed, it may be all original. gatorcpa
As said before, i don't think it's a redial either (or as gatorcpa said is a very good one) and being a 218-2 caliber the lack of T on SWISS is perfectly plausible
Crown is not signed and given its shape probably aftermarket. Dial could be original, but don't you think the U sits a little too low?
