Just thought I´d present this old Hercules from my grandfather possibly great-grandfather. I´m thinking of having it serviced mostly because it´s fun. What do you guys think?
To cherish this pocket watch is to secure a link to your ancestry in a way few other objects can. Maintained properly, a mechanical watch will outlive you and your children. You can decide to get it serviced and wear it - but even if you don't, I advise you not to sell it if you want something to pass down or horizontally. My girlfriend'd father has a pocket watch that his great grandfather bought. It's an old Waltham. He doesn't wear it - he knows very little about mechanical watches. And yet, he keeps it in a glass case proudly in his bedroom. And it will be passed on. By the way - the style suggests it was born in the 1930's-1940's.
A very nice two tone dial with Breguet numerals and classic cathedral hands. The case looks to be Staybrite steel and of high quality. I also like the gilded movement. I agree with @Modest_Proposal, the watch was likely made in the 1930's-1940's. Your grandfather (or great grandfather) had good taste.
welcome neonwatch. nice pocket watch. have you searched the net via the name on the dial? some watches (like Hamilton) put the buyers name on the dial ( like 20 different names on their 17 jewel mvt.). the fun comes by the wearing of it ( a vest with double breasted chain with fob) like "rumpole of the bailey". vinn
Mikrolisk lists 14 companies that used the name Hercules! The only two of which that I know for certain that were actually watch manufacturers were the American Illinois watch company, and the other being the Swiss Record company.
ah ha ! American Illinois. very interesting history making watches, during 1900 to 1940. its on the net. good job of reaserching by Canuck
Don´t know what a stem pipe is but that could be the case since it has problems running. In some positions it works, most not. I´ll ask the specialist if it´s possible to service anyway.
