After months of scouring the interwebs for a vintage "mid century" timepiece, my colleague showed up with this rather obscure watch.

    33mm
    manual wind

From roughly the 1950's. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this brand? plato dial.jpg plato mvmt.jpg plato wrist.jpg

    I also found this forum.
It's google translate so I dont know how accurate is that.

    He is writing:

A Plato, you do not see that much. I think it was a Dutch brand.
I still have the old Plato from my grandfather. There is an ETA movement.

He is quite battered, but my grandfather has had this for a long time. Probably the watch with the best timepiece he ever had, because I also have another watch from him and a pen anchors in there.

    That's a pretty bare-bones caliber. Personally, I'd hold out for a Socrates.

Looks like the ubiquitous AS from that era to me.

Not sure it’s 50’s though. Printed dial with no furniture seems later but that’s an opinion.

Look at the bottom of the picture under the balance wheel - that appears to be the ETA symbol.

Socrates, Plato, I'd wait for an Aristotle. It's more refined than both the earlier models and Alexander the Great had one.

You have to have been living in a cave to not know about them.

Plato's main competitor from the time, the Antikythera mechanism. Movement needs some work, though.
