Maybe I‘m late, but I‘ve just discovered these new Planet Oceans on the Omega website. What the %#*& are they doing??? I can‘t believe what I‘m seeing - but probably there‘s a market for these watches... No prices on the (swiss) website. Found them on Chrono24 for over 150‘000 CHF. https://www.chrono24.com/ch/omega/p...55mm--id9522244.htm?SETLANG=de_CH&SETCURR=CHF
they are in business to make money and there must be enough of a market for that trash to make their production worth while. I used to manufacture components for a trophy company. When a new product was being developed by our customer we would judge its sales potential by how ugly it was, as a rule the uglier it was, the more we would sell so the more we would invest in tooling up front. The most hideous thing that ever came across the toolroom desk, the one we thought was too ugly and far out to ever sell, sold so well we had to retool and open a second production facility because we couldn't extend our building fast enough for all the equipment we had to buy! So don't laugh... that crap will outsell the '57 reissue models we all love so much.
Please forgive any typos in my reply as I can't seem to stop the bleeding out of my eyes! There really is a market for anything. I've seen these kinds of jeweled out pieces from all of the big production houses and so must conclude they've got buyers.
I know it's not going to be a popular opinion but there is something about the orangey/blue one..........sorry! (not that I'd ever buy/afford one! )
It’s not just you OHS, the orange/blue and also the silver/blue do have a certain design to them. I’m a strong purple lover but I also strongly adhere to classic design which really leaves me no options because anything with purple is invariably ostentatious and horrible. I saw the thumbnail of the first one and it looked just purple and not jeweled and it was briefly exciting. That said, there are people out there who very strongly consider watches to be “jewelry” in a more literal sense than most of us, and I can see that appealing to that sort of person. Honestly they really look like women’s watches. But still, those crowns, oh geez...
Tacky stuff. To me it's silly enough that people wear stock out of the box Planet Oceans, Submariners etc., and before dipping a toe in a swimming pool, put their watches in their own lil towels or pouches. I don't abuse my watches, but I have such watches w/o gem encrusteceans, rated to 100s, up to a 1000 meters depth resistance and don't hesitate to enter fresh or salt water wearing them. Personally not into precious gem inlays for bezels or dials, but as for them being on a watch intended for the depths, that is IMO stupidly superfluous.
