Can anyone advise if the 39.5mm PO Calibre 8800 is as good or better than the 42mm PO Calibre 8500. I have tried on the 39.5 & its a great fit but i think the older version 42mm is a slightly better size on my wrist. It appears that the new Calibre 8800 39.5mm has better features though....smart new strap with adjustment built in, a nice shiny bezel, master chronometer status oh and anti-magnetic. Any thoughts?
Well I've tried on the current Omega Planet Ocean watches. See attached. I can still purchase the PO 42mm size but I'm being told that the watch movement Calibre 8500 isn't as good as the Calibre 8800 or 8900 on the new watches. Any advice would be welcome. First picture is 39.5mm / Second picture is the 43.5mm
Well the new calipers carry the METAS cerrtification which is definitely something nice in terms of accuracy and endurance maybe.. as for the size it depends on how you feel really
Don't think you'd go wrong with either one of them, but to say the 8500 isn't as good, is a little misleading. It's a great movement. And so was the 2500 of which I have both and both are excellent.
I like the bigger watch on the wrist. I have the PO 8500 as well and I would pick the bigger watch all day. I'd say 42 fit better in this case. If you like the shinier version of the PO go with the 8900 caliber.
I have the older 2500-based Planet Ocean, and just last week, bought the new 39.5mm in blue. The selling point for me was the thickness of the case. The larger 8500 models simply felt too "tall" for me. The thickness of the 39.5mm PO is basically the same as the older 2500-based Planet Ocean models. I just came across the new 39.5mm size and they look sweet. Thickness is about the same as the older 2500 movement PO (14.16mm) which is a plus for me; perhaps my next diver watch?
Tried today the PO 39.5 mm in blue and black at my local OB, they both look great! They are a little thick, but ok for the case size. The blue dial and bezel shade is definitely darker than the blue of the SMPc, which I had and flipped since was too light for my taste. Guess one of these may be my next diver on my collection (replacing the SMPc), question is blue or black? I'm thinking blue as already own a Rolex Submariner 16610 (black dial) so a blue PO might make sense to same some color variety. Below besides my medium black SMPc; for reference my wrist is about 7 inches, but pretty rounded:
Really loved the PO 39.5mm.......but the valve came loose & the watch let water in! Returned it & swapped it for the SM300
