Here is a classic case of what is something really rare worth, when damaged or in less than attractive condition? https://www.phillips.com/detail/OMEGA/CH080118/106 Problems are the dial damage, the engraving, the damage to the bezel. Also lume damage, hands missing lume, chrono creep......Dont mind any of this at a price. Of course it may well be the dial is not damaged and its all on the crystal. The positives are SUPER rare, and with some charm, papers and the bracelet. Anyway I post because I get super exited when I see a rare watch, I am sure once they send me more photos we can see where the damage is, but for now I think it is on the dial All photos from Phillips listing, will happily remove if asked. How much do we think it will achieve? Gentlemen, place your bets.
I think that on a watch like this, condition is less of an issue because where are you going to find a better one ? I'm sure that someone will want to own it and that it won't be far from 100k$.
Well I don't know when this page was last updated??? http://speedmaster101.com/145-012/ But if this is only the 11th example of this watch seen or heard of... and the last went for over $75,000..... I suppose even with it's issues it is highly unlikely to go for less. A visit to Simon Freese could sort those imperfections out to a "Good" standard. It's too rare to expect to find any other examples in the "Collector" category. Serious collectors may go the extra mile on this one. I think the paperwork including the extract will give serious buyers the confidence to pay a bit more. Be interesting to see if the damage is actually on the dial. That will make all the difference to the value. $95,000
One owner, papers & bracelet. Unadulterated. I say 90k. Though I won't use my "shocked" face until it goes over 150k.
Personally I wouldn't pay 20k for that. I mean, you pay a premium for a specific dial and that dial isn't much desirable in that condition imho. #conditionmatters See the price difference between a collector grade 2998-1 and a running on the well known price chart... same applies here but it will be stirred by the auction hype.
If it sells in the range of $80-100K as some are expecting, I wouldn’t be surprised because of the rarity. That said, gosh, there are so, so many other watches at that price point that one could buy in great condition for the same money. The x-factor, I suppose, is if you’re a hardcore Speedy collector looking to tick a box (and a very tough one to tick, at that) you’ll pay what you need to in order to get what you want. My question is, what do beautiful examples go for these days? I’m scared to hear the answer.
What beautiful examples?.... Where are they?....@Spacefruit has seen or heard of less than 1 dozen of these watches. Has anybody on the forum got a beautiful example of one of these Speedmasters?
Looks to me like the issues are on the dial, so while a nice and very rare package, the condition should still play a part. I think $65k + fees.
I have heard of a really beautiful one with papers and extract mentioning the dial sold for a bit above 100k€ a 4-5 months ago. But hey, it was another league. Correct, it's not the matter of having the money here but having an opportunity to buy one - so some guys will fight for this one... Still, in this condition it wouldn't tick a box for me.
Well, it only takes two interested parties to run the pricing up, and with so few known to exist (50ish) I’d say this will sell around 90k.
The spread between "Collector" and "Good" for the rare birds is about 1X. Considering this a notch or two less than good, IMHO I wouldn't be surprised if this couldn't go above €50k before the fees. Just my 0.02.
Sp Spacefruit has a couple of amazing ones. I don't and think I never will, let's say that it is a grail. For the time being, the grey dial scratches the itch
