The catalog for this arrived today, and I am not really a buyer at the moment, but I was struck by the attractive watches and low estimates. Am I wrong? https://www.phillips.com/auctions/auction/HK080118 There are some interesting modern Speedmaster LE's at very attractive prices including an Alaska and Japan Racing. There is a brown 2911xxxx Speedmaster with an uncharacteristically high estimate. The description of the BA145.022 is uniquely (for an auction house) clear and informative. The Rolexes were out in force, lots of Zenith Daytonas and not very good Patrezzi's. Lots of steel Rolexes with descriptions that made me look twice, as in carefully explaining the details. (I am not a Rolex guy). If I was in the region I would definitely go and view this auction - just for the sheer variety I see in the catalog. So, I ask anyone who knows rolexes, what are the sleepers and bargains in this, any horrors? What does anyone think of this auction, do I simply have rose tinted spectacles on as the sun is shining here in Chicago?
Estimates are one thing... Hammer prices another thing... add the buyer's premium and You'll get yet another thing
(I think the catalog is not online yet, I cannot seem to navigate to it - if anyone can, post a link!)
well true, but it has not always been the case that the estimates are low enough to make people notice - my point is in this case they are consistently lower than i would expect based on previous auction estimates.
Ha, well the Omega watches in the Geneva auction are way out of my league. I suspect same for the HK catalog. It will be interesting to see where these prices go. Im afraid my vintage Speedmaster collecting/buying days are over given these price points. I do however think I might still be able to pick up a racing dial mark 2. So I have that to look forward to.
Can anyone tell me when Alex Ghontbi got involved with this auction? As some of you may know, Alex was the VC Mod on PuristS and most recently headed The Hour Lounge for Vacheron.
