The 1972 Canada/Russia 8 game series to determine hockey supremacy took place 45 years ago. Canadian player Paul Henderson scored on Russian goalie Vladislav Tretiak to win the series for Canada. Caught this clip on the evening news this week. During a television interview, Henderson was clearly wearing an Omega Speedmaster on a black strap. Perhaps topical, since the 2017 hockey season is just beginning.

I remember the teachers setting up a TV in school so we could watch game 7, special moment if your Canadian.

I was managing a store in a major mall during that series. I remember taking a break from work, to head for the TV department of a store in the mall where I saw the goal being scored. Was it a live broadcast or a re-run of a sports broadcast? Don’t remember. Special moment if you’re Canadian? I sorta thought any win by any democracy (even Canada) over Communism might (perhaps) transcend borders! Perhaps I am incorrect 🙁.

Back to the topic. The interview (on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the series win) clearly shows Henderson wearing a Speedmaster.

When I had access to a NHL locker room the most watches I saw were Rolex and Patek followed by G Shock. Of course there were many others but that is what I remember.

My entire school filed into the gym to watch game 7 on a small B&W TV...only in Canada do we take time out of a normal school day for a hockey game.

All players and management of Team Canada 72 were given Speedmasters engraved with their names and Team Canada on the back. That’s what Paul is wearing now on a leather band. Three have been auctioned in the last few years for a bit more than $2000 Canadian each.

Ahh yes! Alan Eagleson! Read all about this scumbag on Wikipedia! Fined $700,000.00, spent time in jail, removal from the Hockey Hall of Fame (he resigned before sentencing) after many Hall of Fame members demanded their names be removed unless Eagleson’s membership was revoked. Lost the Order of Canada appointment, though he wore his pin during sentencing. Cost NHL players millions, including bankrupting several. Invited to participate in the International Hockey Series in 2012, but the invitation was withdrawn at the insistence of numerous prominent players. How it is that he is still alive is a bewilderment to many. Scumbag is too good a description of this dispicable creep!
