i didn't know there are fake Panerai as well. Is there any good website out there with details of the calibre for comparison between the real and fake movements?

There are basically fakes of every single watch of value out there, all the way down to Seiko SKX007. It makes me super leery, but most of the fakes aren't very good. However this isn't always the case, and the more money you put into it, the better it gets. Strangely one of the only watches that doesn't have a convincing fake (that I've ever seen) is the Speedmaster. The subdial spacing is always wrong.

Agree with you. Usually we only can find franken vintage Speedy with the latest original replacement parts. There are people selling fakes latest Speedy which include the snoopy limited edition but usually they will highlight it as premium grade copy which goes below $150.

Either that or the fake Speedmasters have become so good that they are indistinguishable from the real deals 馃槜

So a few things jumped out at me immediately on this one, so I'll point them out for those who missed them...

A - finish here is rougher than I would expect - not conclusive but it was something I noticed right off the bat.

B - no pivots in the holes of the jewels - this is a major tell on movements where the fakers have simply added a plate on top, and a common feature of the fake 8500 movements that I've mentioned before.

C - the location of this escape wheel makes no sense at all - it's way above the balance so in relation to the escapement this is nonsensical.

D - you can see here the regulator for the 7750 base movement used - this is a pretty distinctive regulator, so one I recognized right away.

Panerai does used a stripped down 7750 in many of their older watches, since it's one of the few automatic movements available that has the constant seconds at 9 o'clock. On those (and this one I suspect) they remove the chronograph components, and the dial side parts are from the 7765, which has an instantaneous date change that flips right at midnight. The base movement here might be a Chinese clone since I would think they would want to use the cheapest thing out there.

Even if you don't know what the movement should look like, these are things that can help you spot a fake.

Cheers, Al
Thank you so much!
That is a better lesson, especially with Panerai.

I will never buy a secondhand Panerai after reading this thread. Incredibly scary stuff. Not like I was in the market for one anyway....

Wow, I'm admittedly not an expert on Panerai, in fact I would only really consider myself minimally qualified to evaluate Kermits and Speedys but your breadth of knowledge is impressive.

You need to research the watch more. If you can't idbelieve notify the movement clearly don't pull the trigger. I bought a radiomir pam 183 with no papers, but only after a long period of looking into the movement and al the tells. Good luck though, Panerai is a wonderful and original brand. Live them!

Panerai is plagued by high end fakes. You need to study them really hard with HQ pictures or you will get burned. People are shelling out over $500 for these fakes, so the fakers are getting better by the day.

Any thoughts on this one? Came up for sale on facebook with only these 2 photos: I have scoured the internet, but can't find a dial that has ALL 4 arabic numbers (12,3,6,9) with a small seconds dial;medial to the 9, and a date medial to the 3.

easiest tell for p9000 fakes are location of balance wheels.
if it isn't at 7 o'clock, it's a fake.

This one was easy, take the 111 oder 000 oder 005 with the Unitas movement. Very tricky to identify.
