Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter If you have been on Fratello Watches recently, you’ve probably seen our review of the Breva Genie watches with their altimeter functionality. Of course in an entirely different [price] segment, Oris is now introducing their Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter watch. It is the first time that a mechanical altimeter complication is used in an automatic watch. The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter uses an extra crown, located at 4 o’clock, to activate, correct and deactivate the altimeter indication. When entirely screwed-down, the altimeter is inactive and the watch remains water resistant to 100 meters. […]

Unless you are in an unpressurized cabin, sorta useless. However many watch complications are pretty useless, so this is not too surprising.

At least with this, unlike the depth gauge, it won't get filled with debris!

Why does this one get to claim "first"? How is the altimeter different from that of the Favre Leuba Bivouac from the 1960's?

"mechanical altimeter complication is used in an automatic watch"

Or they could have claimed "first mechanical altimeter complication with a grey fabric band"

Or "First mechanical altimeter complication with two big crowns"

On the level of the (resurrected) Ball watch that has a built in thermometer that only functions properly off the wrist. I suppose it's good for knowing your approximate body temp while wearing it?
